I'm familiar with a lot of old ones between antiquing and reading but there's certainly quite a few I haven't seen mentioned.I'll try to remember. It's nothing that you would likely have heard of. A lot of blends have come and gone in the past 100+ years.
I haven't tried any blends with much more than 6-7 years of age on them, but I'll give you my experience.I've seen a lot of people say that burley doesn't really change with age, have you experienced any exceptions?
That makes sense, I'd imagine with time the VAs in a burley based blend take on a prominent condiment role like latakia or perique. I'd never heard that Orientals age really well too, of course there aren't many all Oriental blends and they rarely appear without VAs so maybe people don't notice it as much.I haven't tried any blends with much more than 6-7 years of age on them, but I'll give you my experience.
The OTC straight burleys (Velvet, Sir Walter Raleigh Regular) really don't change much. Blends with 80%-90% Burley and 10%-20% Virginia like Pegasus, HH Burley Flake, etc. age wonderfully. The tobaccos meld together more and the Virginias ferment. Do they change as much as a straight Virginia? No. The blends that would likely change the most are straight orientals and Virginias with high sugar content, as they will ferment the most.
I listened to the recent Per Jensen interview and he is apparently working with a Turkish tobacco company to create a new flake that is almost pure Oriental tobacco. It will only be available in Turkey, Switzerland, and certain Asian markets. That makes sense, I'd imagine with time the VAs in a burley based blend take on a prominent condiment role like latakia or perique. Hopefully it will become available elsewhere in time. I wonder if it’s the Gladora company that produces the Pesse Conoe tobaccos that are available in Japan and Turkey? There has been talk that they may start exporting to the US and elsewhere.Hopefully it will become available elsewhere in time. I'm glad he's found new work
Yes, the name of the company eluded me but that is it.I wonder if it’s the Gladora company
