We lost our cat HeeHaw 2 years ago. We found her as a tiny kitten in 1997, she was 26 years old. :)

I had a brown tabby, her name was Spider, she lived to be 26 as well. I had a friend whose Siamese lived to be almost 28. It does happen but it is extremely rare.

From the years in the business I've noticed cats that live in the country just live longer than city cats usually.
Ive also noticed that city people spend a ton of money to keep their cats healthy, while country folk kinda just "let them be".
We have a lot of clients with cats that are well over 20 years old......99% of our clientele live in the boonies.
Dogs....not so much.
Dogs need more care and have far more health issues generally.
But we currently have a Scottish Terrier that is 24 years old. She was bought at a pet store in a mall in Erie PA....which is probably the worst place to buy a dog. But she has zero health issues and still gives hell to the woodchucks. :)
She got nailed bad by a porcupine about 10 years ago. By the time she got to us, she had pulled most of the quills out herself. She's one tough little 25 pound dog!

Shockingly she wasn't that healthy. She had an autoimmune disease that caused issues like skin problems and stomatitis. She was on Depo Medrol shots and had most of her teeth removed over the years. In fact, that's most likely what killed her. She was in great shape, but her kidneys gave up. Probably due to the illnesses.
As far as food, that's a tough one.
I get Hills Science Diet and other "prescription" foods very cheap due to my job, but they aren't the best and most animals don't like it.
I suggest any dry kibble with low fat is usually good. We personally use "Chicken Soup For The Soul" in the house. In the clinic they all get Earthborn Holistic, which is great food too.

I will add that good country living on a farm is good medicine for animals.
Our animals all live long lives.....unless they are stupid.....then they die quickly in a whirl of excitement!
What would you suggest for a cat with early kidney disease? He prefers dry kibble but will eat some wet food (not the ones he's supposed to!).
Do you suggest phosphorus binders? I've used aluminum hydroxide in the past (10 yrs ago) but there's also calcium carbonate.

Phosphorus binders and Potassium are usually the first step.
The plan is to slow progression, the disease isn't going away. Keep a close eye on their bathroom habits, both #1 and #2. These are usually the first sign of progression. Food and water intake should be watched. Maybe add electrolytes to their water. Any food they will, or can eat is good.
Keeping them hydrated, fed, and using the litter box is the mission.
They can go from early diagnosis to renal failure pretty quickly.
Once their eating, drinking, and litter habits change for the worse, its time for another plan maybe.
Sorry to be so blunt, but giving online advice needs to be short and direct. Most of all, follow your vets advice, they know your pet. I just gave some generic advice. I hope all goes well, good luck.

For those who know what I do...or did....or kinda still do for a living, you can imagine how many kittens and puppies im offered for "free".
The rule is.....NO more pets!!!
But my wife made a law which states, "if it happens organically, it stays".
Well, about an hour ago I was walking the property along a road near our house. I hear a high pitched SCREAM. My initial thought was "tiny kitten", then I thought, and hoped, it was a Cat Bird...which sounds like a tiny kitten.
So I say, "kitty, kitty, kitty", and the screaming stops. Then my worse nightmare pushes its way out of the tall weeds. A goofy little kitten.
This is FAR from anywhere. The closest building is a mile away. The closest house is farther.
The little monster came right up to my dogs like they were best friends.
I sent the dogs looking for more kittens...none found.
Sooooo, I bring the monster home, show the wife, and she LOVES it immediately. :(
But, now the kitten hates the dogs, and has no clue there are 2 cats that live here. They are going to freak out. The older cat HATES other cats, including her sister of 2 years. The younger cat....I have no clue.....we will see. They are out and about right now.
Anyways, here IT is....I haven't even looked to see if its a girl or a boy yet.
It is impossibly smaller than it looks.
I will update when I look at its gender. :)

Ah you got to keep it! It came to you. That’s how the cat distribution system works I don’t make the rules.

Last week my kids surprised me with two 10 week old kittens for my Birthday. Meet Iommi (Siamese mix) and Cozy (Torty/Calico mix). Iommi after Tony Iommi (guitarist for Black Sabbath) and Cozy after Cozy Powell (drummer for countless bands including Black Sabbath). Cozy loves cozying up with my wife, and when she makes biscuits, I call it her drum solo. LOL

We currently have them in the shop separated from the other animals, mainly the other cats, as the kittens came from a hoarder situation and some of their litter mates had a fecal parasite. We don't want the cats sharing litter boxes yet, so they'll spend about a month out in the Metal Lounge (shop) before we bring them in the house. This will allow us to treat the cats and verify that they don't have the parasite before bringing them inside.

Here is a few pics of the new "Metal Kitties" Cozy and Iommi.
