Welcome!

St. John's?

Used to live there for a bit. Interesting place, with lots of history for a Canadian city. But I’ve gone rural to bring up kids. I grew up rural, and I wouldn’t know how to parent in the city. I want to give them a pocket knife and water and kick them out the back door into the woods for the day.

Exactly! I need my kids to understand rural living, otherwise they will be screwed when they are adults. Going from rural to city is an easy transition if they desire it. The other way around..........not so much.

Yep. Grew up living that life. It was amazing as a kid. But now as a parent it sounds horrifying, hahaha. I still hope my daughter and/or future kids take it up though. It is the greatest game in the world.

I’d bet Alaska isn’t that different than Newfoundland in quite a few respects. Rugged terrain, tough weather, dangerous jobs, low population density, possibility of being eaten by wildlife.

Although I am envious that there are at least three Alaskan pipers on here, whereas I have never seen another piper in NL yet.

Agreed. I don‘t know why, but I also noticed my city-grown friends have had more trouble being comfortable outside a city than the other way around.

Sounds about right. Our moose are much bigger though ;)

Yeah, there are a couple but one isn't so active and the other is.......well........Warren. Seems like a good guy, but not exactly a social butterfly, hahaha. There is a FB page with a few others around though, so hopefully I'll get to have a bowl with somebody at some point!

It’s a fun place. It’s got it’s own cultural feel, adding a layer of homey feeling to the nice views. Rather than on the coastline, I’m in a small town on a salmon river in the woods. More moose than icebergs and whales. If you’re touring the province, let me know.
Definitely. As a matter of fact, I think I need to travel there before April for research purposes: my area of research is Vinland and Norse presence in Canada, and I'm yet to visit L'Anse aux Meadows. ?

Funny, it appears that Helge Ingstad was a pipe smoker himself, but many were in the 60's.

I read somewhere that they found more evidence of settlement down the west coast of Newfoundland, not near L’Anse aux Meadows at all. It’s amazing to me how much history is lost just under the soil, or 100 feet offshore.

Was that recent? Have any names or links or something to that?

Newfoundland! The birthplace of former Detroit Red Wing Dan Cleary, the first Newfoundland born player to win a Stanley Cup! I know, because he did it against my Penguins in 08. Thankfully we paid him back in 09 :)

Welcome to the forum from Knik River, Alaska!

Always pleased to see another another Penguins fan.

Welcome from Edmonton! Having lived in both rural and urban settings, I would agree a lot of city people struggle with the transition to rural living but I have known a number of people raised in a rural environment who struggled with transitioning to urban life. Urban to rural may well be more difficult but the reverse is not always very smooth or successful. That said, rural can be a great place to raise a family.

Well, I have been observing the farmers and cattle ranchers life in one of south west TX area, and what I have learned to this day ,that way of make a living is far from being romantic, one has to be pretty tough out there or become as like, lots of physically demanding work from dawn to dusk ,day after day,,definitely no place for sissies

Working on farms as a teenager convinced me go to school to get a cushy office job.

It’s honest work, but not easy.
