First few times I smoked it, I felt meh about it considering the price. I still feel meh about it especially because OF the price.

I just bought 10 tins, retail, at $7.66 per tin. Granted, shipping was $40, but I bought other things too.
Even if I hadn't bought other things, that's still only $11.66 total per 50g tin (shipped to your doorstep).

It's not bulk pricing, but for a tin of quality tobacco it's really not bad.

So, what does it matter what Tolkien smoked? If you like it - smoke it. I was going to hit the sack, but this made me want to try this again. First few times I smoked it, I felt meh about it considering the price. I still feel meh about it especially because OF the price. There is better tobacco for less. How much does the Tolkien marketing increase its value?

I don’t get It. Who cares who smoked it and liked it. Perhaps with the other options available today that weren’t then, he’d have smoked something else? Nobody knows, but it seems we try to care to much about what others enjoy rather than focus on what we enjoy. Personally, I think blends that cost about 50% leas than Capstan are better. Only an opinion, but think a blind taste test would demonstrate what is actually true. So, history and a trail of trash can leave clues, but not motive. In addition to being potentially light in income as a teacher, it’s possible the tins served as a resourceful use of items to reduce waste and minimize more costs to stay organized.

You also cannot underestimate the impact of going through the depression and how it influenced people’s behaviors. Saving and doing without are considerations. Maybe he got Capstan because of the price then. Bought by pound cause cheaper that way. Only bought that because exploring other blends was wasteful. Who knows. Who cares. Sorry. Just some extra thoughts on the topic.

End of day - none of it matters except what you like. Stick with that, and you’re good. ?‍♂️
I'm not sure it's a big deal for most, but is for some. I'd guess kind of like why I bought some Wilke 515 because that's supposed to be Basil Rathbone's preferred blend, or trying what Walter Cronkite liked, or getting a "Bing" shape in a pipe. Just a nice association.

I actually like the 515 and haven't yet tried the 72, but got some in a sampler bundle. If I don't like it, I sure won't buy any more of it.

I confess this conversation motivated me to order some "Blue" - so I'll give it a try and will confess absent the connection I probably wouldn't have decided to try it. We'll see how it goes!

I don't know if I would call it marketing. Capstan/MacB is not pushing this on anyone. If you like LOTR and you also enjoy smoking a pipe, it's logical to give Capstan a try. Just as if you like Hemingway you might try a mojito (questionable though if this was actually his drink of choice). It's more accurately folklore.

To me, Marketing would be more like Nike Air Jordan basketball shoes, etc.

I agree. I think there’s more layers to liking tobacco than just flavor sometimes. Some of us smoke a blend because our dads or grandfathers smoked them. I see it here and on a lot of forums.

I think when people say smoke what you like, tbh what we like is spectrum that can’t be defined by someone else. If I like a blend that my favorite author liked and I can share a commonality with him I think that’s another layer of enjoyment.

Also, I’ve got quite a bit of each Middle Earth blend from The Country Squire and I like a few of them a little and a couple a lot. But I do know that I’m reminded of a few of my favorite parts from those stories when I’m smoking them and, again, that gives me another layer of enjoyment other than just good tobacco. So in my mind, I am smoking what I like. And for those that don’t have the same experience or connection, then you do you and I’ll do me. Cheers and happy smokes everyone!

I have heard some say that Former's Cross Grain Flake is actually more similar to the Capstan of Tolkein's day. I have no knowledge one way or the other, just throwing it out there.

Haha, looks like this needs a quick bump to keep the facts in order!

I confess to having never read LOTR and have a wife and two daughters still insisting I should, but want to make me read The Hobbit first. Seems daunting - maybe in the dark days of January, 2022 I'll try.
Audio books
Rob Inglis does a great job on the Hobbit and LOTR trilogy.

After my test smokes of Capstan Blue , I went deep on it. I bought around 150-200 tins as I knew it would age brilliantly and I was right. My 8 year vintage is great. I am sure with another 5 plus years it will be even better.
If there is anyone who loves a great Virginia flake I highly recommend the Capstan Blue Flake. For a nice morning first of the day smoke, their 2013 Gold Ready Rubbed is quite tasty.

Oh yeah, this total bullshit about square tins losing their seals, I have to believe you are keeping your tins in lousy conditions. It sounds like huge temp and humidity changes as I have never once opened a square tin that was not in perfect condition. The oldest square tis I opened were from 2001. The oldest tins I have opened were 1997 100 gram Tall Boys of Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky and they were perfect. All my tins stay out of the sun and I keep my home at 73-74 degrees with little to no humidity. I have a whole house dehumidifier on my hvac system.

I should have added that while I enjoyed the movies, the books sucked. JR was a shitty writer, I am surprised more people have not mentioned this fact. I read the first book and the after reading half of the second, I couldn't subject myself to his pathetic writing anymore and quit on him.

Valid points. However, it’s also logical to use something people like, connect it with something else they like, and then use it for marketing. Haha. I’m not trying to start an argument - I promise. I get what you’re saying, and I also get that sometimes conversations, regardless of where they are and who does them, is beneficial to certain products. Perhaps lumping the marketing into just the company doing it is wrong - but, never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth which has, IMO, translated to online forums and ratings for online retailers. Influence might be better term than marketing, as may be grassroots efforts. I dunno. It’s a rabbit trail we don’t need to run that far down.

It has to be a good product to sell at the prices it does. I can’t say it fits my tastes, but I can still appreciate a large number of people who enjoy it. I am probably going to keep what I bought and share with other people who enjoy a pipe. Seems like a good freebie tobacco for some folks. ?

Smoking a bowl as I type.
Creamy, doughy, freshly baked bread latte. Yes, a bread latte. Hints of citris and hay. Hints of other stuff I cant quite pin down but its there, in this bread latte of mine. Not my everyday smoke but I dont smoke my favorites everyday due to my irrational fear they become boring.
Gets better with age.

Love me some OGS. Haven’t bought any in a while, but I’m sitting on a few tins that are couple years old and I’ve been trying not to open them. Lol
If you cost out a 3 gram bowl of Capstan Blue and Orlik Golden Sliced you are saving pennies per bowl by smoking a totally inferior product. OGS is shit compared to the Capstan Blue Flake. OGS is all grass and hey and that is the last thing I want to taste in my Virginia's. If you think the Capstan is expensive, it is less than a dollar per bowl for a good 1-2 hours of smoking pleasure. Try finding a smokable cigar for less than a buck. OGS takes at least a dozen years before it is smokable. Don't waste your time or money especially when you can buy Capstan Blue Flake, Peterson Flake, and others.

I smoke my favorites every day as there is not a blend in my cellar that is not a favorite. When I was building my celllar I refused to settle for any blend that I didn't love. That is why I only ended up with 41 flakes, plugs and rope. If I didn't love it, then it was not added to the cellar.

Don't add shit based on anyone else's tastes. By a test tin, smoke it for a few bowls, if you don't love it, put it away for 6 months or so and then give it one more shot. Now if you test a tin of something with a Lakeland sauce and it grosses you out right off the bat, give the tin away to someone who will appreciate it and then just toss the pipe inn the fireplace. If you test a tin and it gives you an immediate hard on, load up on that shit and don't look back.

I would also use Tobaccoreviews, find someone with similar tastes to yours and then buy a tin to compare to the guy on TR. Is he full of shit or does he know what he is talking about. I consider Jiminks to be a good friend, but I don't agree with many of his reviews. He tastes grass, hey and earth where I taste none of those. Obviously we have different taste buds and mine are obviously superior to that Pike jiminks, freaking rank amateur compared to my great ness. I do think I have 3 reviews on TR, not many but they are prolific. jiminks whishes he could have my taster.

Lol this is a pretty heavy handed suggestion for someone you know nothing about. I smoke plenty of Capstan. It’s a daily for me. But I also enjoy OGS. I guess our tastes just differ. Just because something is different doesn’t make it inferior. I have quite a bit of tobacco cellared, some of it I like a little, some of it I like a lot, and some of it I love, and these things can change based on the day. I didn’t buy OGS to save money from buying buying Capstan, and tbh I cost analysis when purchasing tobacco doesn’t exist for me, so I have no idea where all this is coming from.
