Cant detect flavor in my aromatics

Are my taste buds dead? I read reviews of tobaccos and people are discussing the flavor of this or hints of that. Sometimes its almost like reading wine or bourbon reviews. So, to my point. I just received my first order of Boswell's Berry Cobbler and it doesn't taste much different than any other tobacco. In fact, it tastes like tobacco. Im not getting any flavor whatsoever. Are my taste buds dead? Am I smoking too frequently? Is the description for the smell of the smoke? Someone please tell me Im not destined to smoke a pipe and not taste what everyone else is tasting.

Hmmmmm.... Based on this, it would appear that I just need to keep trying different tobaccos until I find one that is heavily topped. Anybody have any recommendations for a heavy cherry or vanila?

Well, as a new guy in this realm, I sure would like to taste some flavoring for a change from cigars. Granted, just the hobby of pipe collecting and the other aspects of enjoying a good tobacco make this adventure fun on its own, I would like to get the full experience. I will have to keep trying different tobaccos I gues. Oh bummer right?
In the meantime, maybe someone could suggest a tobacco like what Im looking for.

Jar I think it's the exact opposite. The heavier the casing/topping, the more you're just going to taste burning sugar. I gave up aromatics years ago, but the best had much more subtle flavorings.
Remember the reason you're doing this in the first place... to taste the TOBACCO.
Otherwise if you just HAVE to have cherry vanilla, there's always ice cream.

Lol... true bigvan. That does put it into perspective. When I was reading some tobacco reviews there were the descriptions of tasting different flavors. I'm not detecting those flavors so I thought I was missing something.

Jar, I think I know what you mean; those reviews where the writer detects "undertones of cherry" or "hints of leather, wine and orange peel". Reminds me of wine reviews.

one blend i have tried is C&D's black gold maple and it taste like pancakes pm me i will send ya a sample if you are intrested but i must admit i am enjoying burleys and english blends way more than areos

those other bacci blends...after that go back to Aros...I bet you

Not cherry or maple...but read reviews on those as well...maybe

I think you are right thesmokingdragon about just needing more time. I will keep looking for those finer flavoring points but wont take the flavor label so literally. I am enjoying the pipe smoking experience overall. Of course the recommendation I have been given wil be added to the list cuz I do want to taste some of whats out there.

You could try drinking a glass of ice-water while you smoke to clear your pallet.

And... slow down.

You might also, back off on the heavily cased Aromatics, and try something.......

It's a mild Aromatic, that has a very pleasant room note (one that is familiar to those around you).

To me a good aro is a combination of the scent and flavor, but often the flavor is subtle. When I first started, I couldn't really pick them up at all. Now, I'm beginning to appreciate a good aromatic. I like Berry Cobbler quite a bit, MacBaren's Vanilla Cream Flake is also nice and Lane's 1-Q is a nice, but subtle aromatic. I do find it helps if I sip slowly with the aromatics.

Try some of the Boswell blends Jar. They're one of the few few aros i tried that actually tasted like they smelled. Sweet Tea Christmas Cookie, Apple Strudel, and Berry Cobbler were good Aros.

Been wondering about this myself too. Tried a few different aromatics and never tasted all those wonderful flavours that everyone else seems to taste. Then I started smoking slowly and those flavours started to come through. Think half the battle was that I was expecting them to be really obvious but their not, I'm getting hints of vanilla or cherry etc now. Just don't expect it to be all you can taste. Also try some English blends and then go back to the aro's. That helped me
Good to hear quite a few positives on here about boswells berry cobbler. Got a trade going on with Marmalade (member here) and am eagerly waiting on the delivery of berry cobbler he's sending. Can't wait to try that

Just out of curiosity, how is your pack and light? I find if a bowl is packed too tight (especially easy to do with aro's, since they tend to have more moisture), or not lit evenly, the flavours go all wonky.

Something else that it is quite important to remember when tasting tobacco, wine, food, etc. is that your taste-buds can only actually detect a total of five things - salty, sour, sweet, bitter, and umami. The rest of what makes up flavour is actually olfactory, both active (through the nostrils) and passive (through the sinuses); so in a way it is correct to say that the flavour profile is based on the smell of the smoke. Try exhaling through your nose as opposed to your mouth; a whole new world of flavours will open itself to you; including hints of cherry, whisps of vanilla, and fleeting nuances of wines (assuming thats what your looking for in a blend).
