I don't order very much, very often, but for whatever reason, I felt like getting a few new tins after the holidays. I got a package with 4 tins, was charged $24. I got a package with 8 tins, no charges, last package was 6 tins, $260...no logic what sort ever...
that‘s good news, I haven’t had a good deal in years, at least there’s some hope. I just figured high charges were normal now.

Where are you located?

Do you pay the duties first and then complete the reassessment? Or do you let the package sit at the post office until CBSA responds?

Nope you pay after…. You tell the postal clerk you want a reassessment then fill out the form on the package, and the postal clerk returns it to customs after some computer stuff. Some of the clerks don’t even know how to do it.

My guess is once it’s returned they’d rather some money than none, so give you a deal, I wrote 30$ Canadian per tin above but forgot last year I had three come back at 20$ per tin, so who knows…. -Luck of the draw.

But you wait a long time, annoying.

Apologies for late reply, I just joined. Hope you see this.

Alberta here to. Quickly disheartened when I found out what was available to us.

Well they don't have everything I wanna try, this is the best online option I've found as most other shops only ship tobacco within province - Pipe Tobacco - https://gordssmokeshop.ca/collections/pipe-tobacco - Located in Red Deer.

I'm near Edmonton, so Burlington's on Whyte and AK Smoke Shop in St. Albert are my best bet for pipe options and tobacco.

Off to Calgary this weekend to explore a couple more. If worth while, I will let you know.

Damn those prices are criminal. Pipe Tobacco Archives - https://cigarchief.com/product-category/pipe-tobacco/ here's the best online option in canada and they ship canada wide. Alot of stuff out of stock just keep checking for the restock

Yeah - you pay and then file. I filed for one where they charged me Ontario tax which is more than Quebec. Took awhile, but got my money back - to the cent. It's worth calling them on it and I will EVERY time. I always do the calculation before I buy so I know what I'm looking at ahead of time. And if I don't pay duty then I get a wonderful surprise! And - as my father always said - it's in their pockets or mine.

Hello all,

I haven't ever smoked a pipe before so decided to give the hobby a try by ordering a selection of pipe tobacco from the USA (just the top brands for each type to give them a try - aromatics, English etc.) along with 1 estate pipe. It was roughly $300 CAD for the tobacco and $100 for the pipe.

I have been eagerly awaiting my shipment and thought the duty taxes would be like $50-$100. Oh my God I was wrong. They are trying to charge me $600. In what world is the tax 200% more than the product? The breakdown is:

$188 duties
$30 GST
$385 PST
$9.95 handling

My question is, have any other Canadians experienced this? This is absolutely insane. Is this correct? I live in Alberta where we don't even have PST but the lady on the phone explained it's some other tobacco tax they put in that slot for Alberta anyway.

Now I have to refuse my goods and lose my estate pipe and basically give up the hobby. Just thought I'd ask here as I remember Canadians on here recommending 4Noggins before so clearly some people do import... how?!? why?!? 200%??
That's how it works. The federal and provincial governments don't want Canadians buying cheap(er) tobacco from outside of the country so they impose a tobacco import tax so that you learn not to do it again. Most of the tax is provincial, and it varies by province.

Excise Tax$380.79
Sales Tax$49.61
Provincial Tax (ON)$460.45
CBSA Handling Fee$9.95

Order Value (25 Cigars)$431.91
Grand Total$1333.52 $53.34 per cigar

Yeah, pretty much all canadian retailers have the ridiculously high prices due to the taxes. The only place I've found a bit cheaper is Cigar Chief but their prices are still quite high compared to the States.

There are 2 methods;

Yours is called a readjustment when you pay first, I’m talking about a reassessment, you decline the package first with a reassessment and don’t pay first.

The only time I did a readjustment I didn’t get anything back. I guess the one benefit is you keep your tobacco though Instead of returning it to custems.

I think my worry is that I would burn out my seller. If you do the calculation you KNOW 100% what you'll get back. If it was ever refused it just goes up the next notch of the ladder for the refund and an explanation. They have no say in it - it's a calculation plain and simple.

I can’t comment on your context, but my experience has been different. Just technical boring stuff we are talking here, blah blah blah.

You can refuse and send back to the US, or refuse with a reassessment where customs comes back with a better offer. Im talking about the second, and you don’t burn out the seller as they never see a return.

Mine has been refused for your method and It didn’t go up the line, to be fair I don’t know how to do it, but don’t think you can.

And in Ontario they aren’t stable tax prices unfortunately, they are all over the map, if they were stable less people would have issues.

Maybe customs should charge a small fee; 10-20$ Canadian per tin and stop annoying their citizens, make their cash and people wouldn’t be complaining on message boards👌😀 win win
