I recently passed up some 1980s St. Bruno because Jim Inks says the new stuff is very similar. I should grab a tin and see how it is.

I bought some of the ODF ready rubbed bulk and didn’t like it. I really liked the ODF flake, though. Is it just me?
I can’t say. I never tried the flake. @jiminks reviewed both on TR, and seemed to think they were extremely similar. ?‍♂️

Here is what I wrote about the older version when I added an update:
9-30-2016: having very recently smoked the 1980s version, I would say that there are a few differences between the two vintages. The flakes were much longer then. The older version has a stronger, deeper rose geranium topping. The tonquin was a tad stronger, and a little deeper. The tobacco flavors also have more depth, and a little more earth and wood. The taste is essentially the same otherwise.

Like I said, I'm stocked up but I shot them an email too. I haven't bought any tobacco this year but if I come out of TAD retirement I could see this as a serious option.

It's not just you. I think the bulk is not quite as flavorful because it's exposed to air for a longer period of time than the flakes are, so it loses just a little depth.

If you could have picked up that tin of '80's St Bruno for a couple of dollars, it might have been worth spending the money. More than that's it's a rip off. Generally, St Bruno doesn't do well in those Ogden tins. The sauce fades a lot, the inner tin corrodes, the majority have gone to shit in the tins. If you're lucky, you'll get a sense of the Virginia blend underneath the sauce, which is different from the Mac Baren, though not by a whole lot. Overall, the Mac Baren product is OK, though I think they're being a little chintzy on the sauce. I'm certainly happy to have it around.

I'll shoot Mac Baren an email supporting the idea of bulk St. Bruno. I'd buy a few pounds of it, probably the only tobacco I'd add in a significant amount to my closet cellar.

I have an 1980s tin on the way, I couldn’t resist to add it to the line up. I have a 2003-2006 version stored away (in the plastic packet with the foil tear away top) as well but otherwise only one each of the current flake and RR.

Well, I hope that your '80's tin is the exception, though the topping will have faded. Whenever I see these listed for sale it's a P. T. Barnum moment for me.

I still have some of the plastic container versions in the cellar. I should open one up. I liked it better than current Mac Baren production where they're skimping on the sauce.

Yeah I hope it is the exception too! I know it has been stored very carefully, and it was the same price as a current tin so I thought why not. More sentimental than anything. Yeah I’m really keen to try the plastic container release too. I’m probably gonna open it sooner rather than later so the current stuff can hide away

Hey, hey!
Got a response this morning!
It basically said they are considering bringing one pound boxes of St Bruno Flake to the US Market, and are going to talk with Sutliff about it. He said it’d be about four months’ time between the decision and seeing it on the shelves.
Not a definitive “yes,” but certainly not a no. It seems they are seriously thinking about it. I like the Ready Rubbed, but I’d buy the flake if it comes in a one pound box.

Me too.

Dear Tim,

It seems that there is a wawe starting in the USA to get the St. Bruno Flake as bulk tobacco. Please rest asure that
we do ours to make this happen. I am in contact with Sutliff Tobacco in USA (our importer) and we are considering
to do it.

In any case it will take some time before it will be available in USA due to the fact that we have to make the blend, press
it and store it over time, pack and ship it before any tobacconist in USA will be able to get it.

Please rest asure that we will do our best to do so.

Stay safe and happy smoke.

Med venlig hilsen / Best regards

It would be excellent to be able to buy St Bruno in bulk. Would be curious to see how much it would go for as it is one of the more expensive pouch tobaccos but well worth the price as it is different.
