You can find some good stuff. Shopgoodwill.com occasionally has some good pipes too. Feel free to PM any time about a pipe.

js, the finish on those Mastro's is called rusticated, they will smoke nice and cool in most cases. I also would stay away from ebay until you do a lot of home work. There are just too many things to look at and you will be overwhelmed. bigvan made some great suggestions also, you cannot go wrong with any of his if you see something you like. Here is another pipe that I believe will be a fantastic smoker.

Adam, a lot of new smokers have no idea what to even look at on ebay, how are they to know what is a quality pipe? You cannot expect a newbie to understand that a Jensen that might look nice is really a piece of crap. Also restoring isn't for everyone, I would never restore a pipe, I only buy pristine pipes on ebay. It takes months to understand the hundreds of different brands and what prices should be. I think that newbies who go to ebay unarmed get burned way more than they ever get a good deal. You were much different when you started, not everyone has the talent to refurbish like you.

I understand what you are saying but I did my research. I was restoring pipes before I even signed up to the forum but at the same time if he has us to look over pipes then I don't think there would be a problem.

Adam, like I said, you are different, most of us are clueless when we first start. It took me months to figure out what was what on ebay and it took a lot of research. I didn't buy anything until I knew what I was doing which is why I stuck to new pipes when I first began smoking a pipe. Also buying new showed me what is a good smoker and what is not, it helped me understand the estate market, and what to look for and what I liked in a pipe. I think JS should stick to new or pristine estates from the online sellers until he has time to learn the estate market on ebay.

I remember being a new smoker and eBaying left and right, ended up paying waaaay too much for a bunch of dogs that were ultimately traded in at my B&M for a proper pipe, after sinking in more funds to clean and restore, if you will. A few of my Petersons came from eBay as well ( they required a minor scrubbing of the stem with MrClean Eraser Pads and a light reaming of bowl cake ), but this was after being "in the hobby" for at least a year. Some people do have the eye for what to get right off the bat, but I know I didn't. I still wouldn't buy an estate that looked like it was freshly dug out of the ground to "restore"...

The extent of my restoration expertise stretches to giving the bowl a ream and the shank & stem a bloody good clean!!!

herbinedave, if I might add
"buy a few cobs and a tin of Peterson Irish Flake and learn how to smoke and enjoy a pipe"
I can honestly say that Irish Flake taught me respect for smoking a pipe. After getting mouth char and general nicotine-induced unwellness from smoking that stuff too fast, I have learned to properly smoke.
