I'm glad some of you think i'm a young "hipster" looking to just make a statement...
I am also aware that smooths smoke hotter. (I have a smooth churchwarden and I am learning to keep it cooler, and I am pretty sure If i darkened the stain on this pipe, it wouldnt change how hot it smoked at all...)
What I was trying to achieve from this post, was instead of tons of replies similar to this: you dont want that, its not what you are looking for, thats for rookie smokers...
I was looking for posts like this: hey, if your looking for a dark colored pipe, check this one out... I gave a general idea of a pipe I am looking for and was looking for personal suggestions from everyone, not derogatory statements.
First of all, have you tried searching "bent dublin" on smokingpipes.com and pipesandcigars.com?
within weeks he's posting pictures about a pipe with a "dress" finish?
Ok, trying to stay calm...
Yes I have... I come to these forums not for people to simply google stuff for me...
I have 3 degrees in computers and can find practically anything I want on the internet...
I come here for suggestions, advice, camaraderie, etc
I am wanting someone to say, check this one out, and link it... I am a new smoker, so here I am looking for recommendations.

js, here is another pipe that I think would be a great smoker for you. Mastro's are a great pipe for a great price, I have 2 and both smoke like champs.

http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/mastro-de-paja/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=109508 check out the others they have if you don't like this style.
johncorosz, did you see my post where I asked why you think a Rad Davis pipe is not as good as the Schulte?

Js I have heard that the darker thicker stains with the added shiny aspect might not let the briar breath. The breathing helps you have a cooler better smoking tobacco. I have never smoked one of these types of pipes so I have no personal experience to back it up. If you like it I say go for it but don't be surprised if you find that to be the case. If you want that dracula series I say hold out and buy it when it is released to the US.

Good to know, doesnt necessarily have to be glossy...
Just waxed could be cool... doesnt need to be painted either, a really dark stain, where its pretty black but can still see grain might look nifty

J.S. first let me start by saying I don't think it was anyones intention to belittle you. Hipster I am sure was tongue in cheek, and many of us older fellows wish we could be more hip sometimes. However let me give you a different perspective. There are many pipe smokers on this forum that have been smoking MANY more years than I and I have been smoking a pipe for 20+ years. So that means before the cigar craze before the pipe craze and before anyone cared. The combined pipe smoking knowlege base in this forum is astounding. I am never so humbled as when I follow the advise of someone that has been smoking a pipe for 50+ years and yet they still take the time to give advise to a Pipe smoking pup with 20 years of experiance. Now imagine the combined wisdom of each person on this forum, think of the tobacco's they have tried, pipes smoked. My father used to say I would never be able to think of something that he hadn't already tried. Now that I have teenagers I know the old man was right. I think what you are missing is that people don't want to see a young person who is by his own admission on a budget purchase something that they know from experiance you will not be happy with. Now we are not talking about the difference between a Ferndown and a Brigham here. We are talking about a pipe with a painted on finish, in a colour that holds the heat in, and a coating that keeps the heat in the bowl. Heat is your enemy and has destroyed many a good smoke. The other forum members are trying to tell you, they have been there done that. Wasted hard earned money and are trying to keep you from doing the same. Even gone to the effort of posting links to those pipes. That is in no way is offensive, quite to the contrary its like an older brother watching out for you. I for one would be flattered that they cared. Some might scoff and say well at least its not my money. Several of the members have offered excellent suggestions in your limited budget with which you can achieve a cool, dry smoke and one that will not break your bank. It's your call, it always was but if you don't want to hear others opinions don't put it out there. That my friend is what makes this forum so great.

If I were you then I would consider looking through ebay for a week or two and try and find a good estate. Not only can you get a great deal, restoring estates is a whole aspect of the hobby that can be very fun and rewarding. I can give advise, as well as a lot of other members, on the restoration process.

This is exactly what I was wanting... I now understand that the gloss smokes hotter, I was really asking for a suggestion from each member...
There is about a 12 post spread where the conversation changed to hipsters and teenagers... and fads...

I am the first to say, I know jack shit about pipes...
that is why, again, I am coming here for recommendations on linked pipes that I can make a choice between this week.
out of dozens of posts on here so far, ONLY 4 PIPES HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED

When I go to ebay I usually type in Brebbia, savinelli, mario grandi. It all depends. Knocking people for try to help you is not the best way to get the answers you want.

And my comment about rookies preferring black dress pipes wasn't a judgement... as I said, just an observation.

ok fair point I re-read some of the other posts and there have not been many reoommendations that directly address the specific shape and colour you are looking for, although there have been many fantastic pipes linked in fact if someone else doesnt jump on that SerJac its gonna be my Thanksgiving present to myself ( thanks Cigarmstr) So if I am doing this link thing right here is a very nice rusticated, black finished, bent pipe made by Brigham pipe that is in your budget and would look great as a dress pipe. Link down belowhttp://smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/Brigham/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=103775

This is knocking. If you said nicely like, "Could you guys recommend specific pipes?" They I wouldn't be saying this. I don't usually respond when people loose their cool. I just want to you to understand how it sounds so everyone can be happy. I started on ebay and for me I guess it is more about enjoying the hunt as well.

or even better, what should I look for when searching a pipe on eBay. What brands? What defects can be fixed? Etc

Ok cracks are usually the one thing that is a no no. So if you want an easy restoration avoid pipes that have cracks in the bowl or the stem. The stem can be green as you can use oxyclean and micro mesh to get rid of that. Rim charring can also be dealt with by using a rag with a little saliva and some elbow grease. If you find a specific pipe and send me the link I could look it over and let you know what I think.

Everyone is so afraid of ebay. I don't understand it. As long as you do your research it is no big deal. There are a lot of reputable seller on ebay and if it isn't a reputable known seller you can ask questions and there are pictures. I just don't understand the fear of ebay.

I can understand if you don't want to try restoration. There are a lot of unsmoked pipes on ebay though. Something to consider before throwing out ebay. I started out in the hobby restoring them. There are a lot of helpful youtube videos and even some people on here that would help you restore them. It just seems crazy to me to dismiss a very good route because you are new to the hobby. As long as you don't mind smoking a used pipe and have internet it's not hard.
