Seeing some posts related to mold in some current C&D blends. Anyone experiencing an issue with their tobaccos? Looks like my Steamhouse may be infected with mold. Seems too young to be crystals.

Most of C&D's mold issues were where they were experimenting with a new mold inhibitor. All, and I mean ALL pipe tobacco companies will experience something like a 2-5% mold issues considering all of the blends they sell. C&D only saw a 9-10% mold infection rate back when it was at its worst. The forum just has a magnifying glass affect when there is a problem, making things look worse than what it really is.
~statistics were from Shane Ireland

Personally, I think C&D gets that fractional % more, because they don't case the taste out of their blends, so they are all closer to natural. Although, I don't remember ever getting mold in one of my C&D blends, but then mold doesn't make me freak out. I just toss it and select another tin.

But, crystals do not necessarily come from age. I get them on brand new tins also. I think people just usually don't see them till they pop a tin, especially if they've been setting on that tin for 10 or so years... and, most likely the crystals were on that tobacco a few weeks after it was tinned.

If you check out reddit all the cult blood red moon and 1Q fans would have you believe that 90% of C&D and their sub brands have mold issues.

It's nice to be part of this forum where the pipe smokers actually go outside and live in the real world away from the mind numbing screen glow for hours/days/weeks at a time.

C&D produce some excellent natural tasting blends and I'm still waiting to encounter mold so I can just call SP Costumer Service and relate the blend and tin date, get a new tin and help with quality control.

Good post vos, I fall in another camp. I wont buy there blends, doesn't matter how good they are or how many issues they have fixed. It is my choice to not cellar blends from them and it is my choice only when it comes to my cellar.

This is what I always thought. Their blends are closer to being natural and may be why theyre known for being a little rugged sometimes. Mold proof blends must have some chemicals applied to them that prevents mold, but by the same token it probably prevents the blend from aging properly due to it being sterilized.

I have not experienced anything to suggest that the presence of mold inhibitors also inhibits aging. None. Some toppings, like booze, will have that effect.

C&D ..now Laudisi is a fairly sophisticated business. And they have excellent customer service. They've earned the reputation and they are making their mark in tobacco. If there are problems they will make good on them. I've not had problems with them and never hesitate to order from them. I watched Sykes working very very hard in the early days. He's built a good company.

I picked up 10 tins of Steamhou.. err Steamworks, and popped two tins. One went into a jar and sat a week or two and developed mold. The second tin had mold right from the tin pop.

I will echo the sentiment of boston, C&D/Smoking Pipes/Laudisi (am I missing a branding?) will make it right if you do indeed have an issue. I figured 2 out of 10 tins with mold right off the bat was enough for me to call the game and sent the additional 8 tins back for refund. Pictures were sent to SP and they refunded the first two moldy tins without the need for further correspondence. They get a majority of my business because they have treated me extremely well over the years.

Where did you buy the tins and what were the serials?

You may want to check on that.
The coin flip of curiosity somehow quells my urge to panic and the waiting game seems more intriguing.

IIRC, much of the mold issues had (at least somewhat?) been resolved with Bijou by 2020? Seems like a sharp decline in widespread issue from then, or just before, on.
