Hi all,

I read a post recently on Reddit where someone said Butternut Burley (Scotty's/Hearth & Home) is just Lane Burley Light Without a Bite, and Sutliff Vanilla Custard, 50/50. Butternut Burley is only available as a blend your own from Pipes and Cigars now, but it is a bit cheaper to buy bulk LWAB and Vanilla Custard to mix up your own...and it's not the same. I don't think it IS Vanilla Custard in there.

Vanilla Custard is too vanilla, too cakey...it does not taste the same. Have I received bad intel? Half of Butternut is definitely LWAB, I can taste that, clear as day, but what's the other half, does anyone know? Or does it remain a trade secret?

Butternut Burley and Vanilla Custard are completely different.

The 4noggins BB version is cheaper than Scotty's and just as good.
It's ready to smoke straight from the bag.
It's one of my favourite aromatics.

Not usually a fan of really sweet aro's but Vanilla Custard is so good when I'm in the mood.
It's a touch too moist so I used most of my half pound as a mixer.

Adding around 30% straight Virginia to VC so it's not so moist makes an enjoyable smoke.
20% VC - 70% BB - 10% straight Virginia is really good.

Speaking of Butternut Burley; I'm smoking a bowl of 50% BB 50% MB Vanilla Cream Flake.
Very nice.

Do you have any idea what the other half of it is? I went and mixed some up, but yeah, Vanilla Custard ain't it.

I love, love the old stuff. I don't know why it has to be a blend your own now.
Bloody bureaucrats and stupid politicians.

Just be grateful that at least one can still get their favourite aromatic.
Plus one is able to use as much or as little of the sauce to make it to suit ones personal tastes.

I'd also be tempted to use any leftover sauce to add a little to non-aro's.

I'm keen to find out if they're willing to sell just the sauce.
That would be real handy for those who grow their own leaf. [I've read heaps on how to make a topping yet I've still yet to find any tried and tested definitive recipes]

Butternut Burley. It's made of 50% Lane Burley LWAB and 50% something else. I was told by a guy it was Vanilla Custard. It's not. It's definitely half LWAB. I can taste that clear as day.
My palate is not that refined to be able to tell.
4noggins version is the same as the Scottys version. From what I've heard 4nogs make their blends from scratch so I'd be very surprised if they use any other blend, like LWAB, as a base.

It would make more sense to me, was that they're buying their Burley from the same source as the makers of LWAB and using similar topping ingredients?
The base leaf ingredients of Vanilla Custard and Butternut Burley are probably very similar.

Buy your next pound of BB from 4noggins and see if you taste that LWAB vibe.[Although I did not smoke the Scottys and 4nogs BB versions back to back, the 4nogs tasted just like I expected from memory]
The pound of BB that I last bought from 4noggins around 6 months ago, was not in a kit form so it would be interesting to know if the 4nogs BB blend has escaped the new rules [IIRC the new rules don't apply to older established aro blends]
