Burnt out early 20th C GBD's

I've this pair of cased, what were gorgeous, probably French GBD briar's with silver hallmarks for rare London imports.

Unfortunately one bowl is completely burnt out and the other is choked with some losses around the top edge. Both have silver collars and what might be horn shafts.

So what shall I do with them folks, any sensible suggestions considered.

Pipes like that always amaze me.

Rather, the people who owned them do.

Back then, pipes and pipesmokers were EVERYWHERE and the vast majority of them did NOT become charcoal lollipops... Meaning Information about what to DO and NOT DO to keep your pipe in decent shape was readily available.

My provisional conclusion is that the dipshit simply enjoyed the attention that publicly destroying something most people valued---and everyone knew how to avoid---brought him.

Those are probably salvageable. Firstly I want you to buy a shovel, dig up the dead previous owner, pour a gallon on petrol on his corpse and then incinerate the dip stick. Once the carbon is carefully removed, the pipes are banded and have silver tops added they will probably be usable. Did the owner smoke 1Q in the pipe or worse?

One of them has a large crack
Drill a 1mm hole at the base of the crack to prevent it from extending
Seep CA glue with briar dust into the crack and clamp
Apply a silver band/rim top and you’re good to go.
Steve Laug(RebornPipes) has done quite a few similar repairs.


It depends on whether you’re keeping or planning on reselling
I’m not sure if your time and the cost of the repair will be worthwhile if you’re planning on flipping that pipe.
It will always be a “repaired” item and that will decrease its value substantially.

Circular reasoning alert:

CA glue doesn't withstand pipe-bowl-caliber heat well enough to be used WITHOUT banding/strapping/capping the rim, and...

If a band/strap/cap is used, the CA serves no purpose except as a filler.

The most interesting aspect of these pipes to me is the hallmarks. I haven’t seen British import marks on a pipe before, and i don’t really understand why they have been used. The hallmarks are for 1907 London (imported).

Thought I'd have a go so very gently, and in stages, reemed out all that old gunge. (Images a bit out of sequence). It took a while and there were no more loses to the really badly shot bowl. The other was all good and dandy and has come up a treat.

So now all I have to do is figure out how to deal with the bad boy
