Aw, c'mon, let's not pick on Peterson again. That pipe could have gotten to me in that condition in any number of ways, but the most obvious is what has already been said: just a funky weakening of the wood concealed by normal wood grain that no one could have seen. This kind of disaster, or some other type, probably happens all the time with other brands, but when it's a Peterson everyone starts to pull out the torches and pitchforks. (No pun intended.)

Happily, this is rare. sparrow', you're keeping a very intelligent and reasonable attitude here, but you certainly are due your money back, and rightfully, something extra for your trouble, and for not litigating about it. This would put a new smoker off pipes in a hurry. I love my Petes, but I'm afraid they do draw more complaints than any other established brand. It suggests they might have gotten in a hurry when their orders increased, and maybe had to train some crafts people quickly to replace old timers retiring. I love the look and smoking characteristics of their pipes that I do have, so I hope they can reinstate themselves as a dependable quality brand. I love my Petes -- two B11 bent brandies, a rusticated author, an Around the World bulldog commemorating Ireland, a really small (Group 1) Belgique Rustique, a 999 Rhody, and others.

Thanks, mso, and your points are well taken. It would have been nice if Peterson responded to my letter (now that's an idea--send the link of this thread to them) which wasn't some table-banging rant by an outraged curmudgeon complaining of the incendiary quality of their wares. It would have been nice and appropriate if they acknowledged my letter which included the above photos and was reasonable in diction, as anyone who's read my posts in the past would expect. But still I've grown to associate the Peterson marque with a quality and a aesthetic with what I like four years ago when I joined the piper community, utterly ignorant of brands (except for Dunhill, which I thought everyone owned), and wonder how legitimate the endless criticisms are. Why then the loyal following, the speciality associations? At the same time, however, there's a product called Windows which holds a monopoly despite crash prone performance and remains a monolithic product. Caveat emptor, I guess, regardless of brand or manufacturer.

Wow sparrow that is a insane burn through. Glad to hear you got your due back. I have some Petes and love them, this won't put me off from them. However I will inspect the pipes I buy a little more.

I sent Peterson the link to this thread and about an hour later they wrote back, asking for some details already discussed here. Eventually the responded with a referral as to where to buy another pipe, not exactly the response I was hoping for. Wrote the referral, and now wait for still another response.

Some good news to report: Peterson, as a gesture of good will, wrote me to ask for my address in order to send me a leather tobacco pouch. I consider this appropriate and kind recompense considering I received a full refund for the cremated pipe, along with complete postage. I'll post photos when the item arrives, but I consider this adequate compensation for the irritation and time expended. Thanks, mso--I wouldn't have pursued this if not for your post.

An Interesting Addendum: while looking through search results for this pipe (which I found) I came across another posting about another burn through pipe--by me! I had utterly forgotten about it--it must have been a couple of years ago. This pipe was one of the huge H&H Signature pipes, a

Chubby" billiard, truly enormous, that describes a burn out of the pipe after one or two weeks, and was grudgingly replaced with the same pipe. I think I later donated it to the FPP. But I think this was interesting because no inflammatory comments (sorry, couldn't resist) about the manufacturer were raised. Why not? Because there were no photos? Because the pipe wasn't made by Peterson, which, as we all know, is renown for faulty pipes?

Food for thought.

Good luck and hope your next pipe is better. This never happened to me.... yet.

There's no way to tell what lies just beneath the surface of your pipe bowl.
