Sparrow:
You pursued the appropriate course of action.
But, holy shit, what a spectacular burnout!
I'm sure the Peterson wonks would want to know as well as the eBay seller. I'm 100% sure you'll be covered by the Bay and I hope, as well, Peterson will cover the seller.
Please keep us posted as to how this plays out.

I think @georged's explanation is the simplest, most likely one: Ahidden cavity, which can happen to any brand. Even Dunhill had his famous guarantee for a reason. It would also explain how it escaped the ordinary QA process of such a successful manufacturer. It's harder to believe you bought a cheap imitation that would have fooled you (since you are also a Peterson habitual consumer).
Spectacular incident. One more great story to tell when you next visit your pipe club :)

Are you sure that it's not a counterfeit? Based more on the thinness of the wall than the burnout, which as experts have noted, could happen to anyone in a "perfect storm" of faulty wood.
And did the rim get charred, or is that just the lighting on the photo?

We have a great controversy (among Hungarian pipe smokers) because some of us had problems with Peterson's, and as I know that is because some Balkan folks started to make fake Peterson copies.

(if you send it back to the Peterson in Dublin they will replace - even if it's a replica)

To put closure here: the seller wasn't happy with photos of the damn thing so I had to send it back, but with tracking I had to pay more than the seller did, and he didn't want to pay the extra amount and instead tried to send a replacement when I asked for a complete refund (during this time I had bought a smooth green Dublin churchwarden from shaintiques); eBay stepped in and I got the total refund including full postage. The green Dublin is great for flakes: so far no burn-through!

sparrow, you do realize that you are not supposed to light your pipe with a cigar torch and then smoke your pipe in a 40mph wind. Only way I know to burn a hole that big in a pipe. hehe

You know, I've actually seen a picture (floating around Google) of a similar pipe that had burned through... I've no way of finding the pic again, but I wonder, manufacturing issue (if it was a factory pipe)??

Cigrmaster, unlike you poor guys, I don't have a wife to tell me to smoke outside...heh...and I don't even know what a cigar lighter looks like. Said fire was ignited by an old fashioned Zippo while in the dining room. I think one would need an acetylene torch to create this kind of hole.

Wow! How did I miss this thread? Sorry to hear about that pipe, Sparrow. But glad you were able to get things taken care of.

Wish the seller would have let me keep the remains: I could have donated it to Paul's Pipe Shop smoking museum. But nooooooo, he had to have it back and try to replace it in the process w/o my permission.
