The codger burleys aren't designed to make you sit up and take notice. They are all-day sorts of blends, especially good for a guy that smokes just a couple of blends but may smoke a lot of them.
And this is another reason I don't give up on a blend after a bowl or two - ran another couple of bowls of Sir Walter Raleigh through the Mr. Brog, and while it's still probably not going to occupy the Burley spot in a regular rotation, I'm starting to get more of a sense of where it fits into the tobacco spectrum.
Definitely taking notes on other Burleys to try - Thanks for bringing this one back, Cortez!

Although I do see an occasional CH lover here, I find it strange to not ever see mention of Granger. Darker in color, and perhaps a little stronger than CH. It has the familiar "raisins" tin aroma. I interchange CH and Granger as yardwork smokes. Could I be the only member here that uses it?

I'm finding as the heat kicks up to unbearable numbers and the humidity is even worse (gotta love Ontario, one of the only places in the world that you can get all 4 seasons in a single week), that Carter Hall is something simple and cool that I crave. It somehow retains its flavour and burning properties with this crazy heat (40 degrees Celsius today) while my other favourite blends seem to lose all their oompf. Maybe this is my summertime smoke then and save the premium stuff until the weather cools down a bit.

A few other posters recommended Uhle's Burleys. And--if you like Burley--they're terrific. Blend 00 and Perfection Plug Burley might be the best I've had. Sterling's Double Eagle is great, too. But as I recall it was a bit sweet for me.
Oh--let me revise my previous statement about the best burley I've had. Uhle's is easily rivaled by John Patton's Storm Front.

If you are looking for Bulks then I found Lane's HG2000 to be a very nice comparison to Carter Hall. Its a Cavendish Burley with a Nic kick. CH at $3.60 1.5 oz or $29.00 at 14 oz = $2.07 oz its hard to beat the price. Even with the Lane sale going on I paid $2.56 for 1 oz of HG2000. I definitely prefer CH to PA in the codger Burley category. Haven't tried Grainger or Sir Walter Raleigh.

This might sound silly, but is there a good bulk that's comparable to Carter Hall?
For instance, a lot of folks say Lane's 1-Q is "Captain Black (White) without the junk" with junk referring to chemicals, humectants, etc.
Has anyone found a "Carter Hall without the junk" ? What about Sir Walter Raleigh without the junk?

Try some of the MacBaren blends, like Golden Extra or Burley London Blend. They're both available in bulk, good quality bur/va tobacco, and I don't see any "junk" on them. The BLB does have a topping, but I think it's only a flavor topping, chocolate maybe. The price is right for both, in bulk.

As for the OP, I do not find Carter Hall aromatic in the least! As Roth has mentioned, most all burley has some topping, but it's not usually saturated like a Capt. Black blend would be. Also, I don't think CH has much, if any junk! It's 100% smokable from beginning to end, and needs no drying time!

As i've said in previous posts ... love the CH!
If you want a little "aro" to it, mix it 50/50 with 1Q - very nice blend.
