Thank you for the clarification Rothnh. Being new to the hobby, I am still trying to learn the basics. I am not even sure what blends are what or how many types there are, as of yet, nor even how to know what blend type you are smoking. I am just buying random OTC blends (as that is all I have available locally) and seeing what I like best.

Another "codger" burley blend that I used to smoke extensively "way back when" is Sir Walter Raleigh. I know it is not a pure burley, but it certainly satisfied me for many a year. Still does from time to time, especially if I'm feeling nostalgic.
@paintedklown, "codger" blends are those tobaccos that have been around forever, sometimes called drug store blends because they are sold in so many venues, such as drug stores, not necessarily tobacco stores. They are very basic blends, not hand blended, mostly mass produced by large tobacco companies. Examples are Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh, Carter Hall, Velvet, Half & Half, etc.
I can proudly proclaim myself a "codger", having smoked the pipe for nearly 50 years, many of those puffing on those above mentioned blends. Wait! If I'm a "codger" and I smoke "Nightcap", does that make "Nightcap" a "codger" blend.... :nana:
OK, they're taking me back to the Home... but I'm still a'puffin.....

I read a review of Carter Hall in which the reviewer said (paraphrased) that Carter Hall in a corn cob pipe and a strong cup of black coffee is a gift from God. I wondered about that until I got some Carter Hall, a cob and a strong cup of black coffee and found out for myself. He is right!

If you are looking for a tasty burley, try the C&D burleys. Some of the best. I can also recommend Rothnh's WallHall, the 50/50 Walnut and Carter Hall mixture. Very, very tasty. I have smoked SWR from the time I was in college in another life ago up to today.
So, I'm a codger. But, I recall great moments with SWR, Carter Hall, PA and other OTCs in the past 40+ years I have been a pipesmoker. Wonderful moments in fact.

I like that mix a lot. Fishers naming it as Nutty Walcut sticks better in my head though

I did indeed get the "recipe" for my Wal-Hall from Michael (nsfisher) -- but I think he adds some John Patton Stormfront to the Walnut and Carter Hall for that "Nutty Walcut," which beefs it up some.
Oh yea, I gotcha. I ordered some Stormfront also as a result of that thread. It is a tasty smoke on its own or blended into a little "Wall-Hall"

I agree with tennsmoker,
If you are looking for a tasty burley, try the C&D burleys. Some of the best.

Mac Baren Golden Extra is the Burley blend I enjoy the most. Mac Baren Norwood has its place as an after dinner smoke, but it's behind Golden Extra. Speaking of after dinner Burleys, H&H's L J Heart Burley does a superb job.
BTW, AFAIK, all Burley is flavored. As Roth intimates, without some amendment Burley would be pretty unpleasant to smoke.

Nothing like carter hall to get people posting!
Thanks for posting the article Cortez
Is there a comprehensive book on tobacco? Something geared towards pipe smoking?

I'm still debating whether I like burleys or not. I've got some Sugar Barrel and some Sir Walter Raleigh, which I'm using to break in my Mr. Brog churchwarden, and while I don't mind them, neither one really made me sit up and take notice (as was the case with non-burleys such as Luxury Bullseye Flake, Black House, and other robust blends). Jury's still out, and I'll probably pick up a couple of others to try once I've got jars available... :D

+1 to Roth's comment "The reason is that burley, for me, while others will argue, by itself, has absolutely NO flavor."
The can says "A Distinguished Pipe Tobacco," but I call it "The Extinguished Pipe Tobacco," 'cause that's what I do with it after a couple of puffs.
It is good for blending, though.

The codger burleys aren't designed to make you sit up and take notice. They are all-day sorts of blends, especially good for a guy that smokes just a couple of blends but may smoke a lot of them.
You want a burley forward blend to make you sit up and take notice, go get some H&H Beverwyck. That'll do 'er. Latakia and perique in that bad boy.

I'm a burley kind of guy. I'm enjoying latakia blends recently, virginias, not so much. My go to blends are always burlys, and I'm able to appreciate the nuances from different curing methods, and blenders touch.
Give MacB Burley London Blend a try.
