Start your burley journey with some C&D Pegasus. Then move on to C&D Old Joe Krantz Blue Label, (slightly stronger then Pegasus). If you think you have a grip on what your looking for the next step would be C&D Haunted Bookshop then C&D Old Joe Krantz Original which contain some Perique. Old Joe Krantz has more perique then Haunted Bookshop and both blends contain a much higher nicotine content then Pegasus & Old Joe Blue. If the four blends I've mentioned are a bit too strong for you then I'd recommend something like Granger and Prince Albert. One thing to keep in mind is that Burley blends just revel themselves better when smoked in a corn cob pipe. Good luck on your journey.

Burley is like a beautiful woman that needs to be caressed and romanced to truly be appreciated. Like twenty year old Scotch or a fine wine...

Slow down, sip on it and enjoy it. Don't rush. Big puffs can overheat the bowl and create some of the complaints you had in your original post.

Roger that. Yeah I had a bowl of war horse red and almost hated it. Then looked up on youtube and everyone said to sip slow. I think this is my biggest issue. I forget sometimes and let off a couple big puffs and then boom its ashy tasting

I think it's the high pH in burley. If driven too hard the flavor can turn too aciditic and bitter. The dark cocoa, coffee, nutty notes are best when puffed slowly with a coffee if you drink it.

In it's most traditional form, Navy Flake, Navy cut, or Navy tobacco is a Burley tobacco. It was invented by sailors out of necessity to keep their tobacco fresh while condensing it for storage aboard ship. Most often twisting it into ropes or pressed into blocks, then moistening the leaves with rum, molasses, or spice solutions. When the smoking lamp was lit, the sailors would then cut from the ropes or blocks "coins" or "slices" respectfully.

Burley is like lamb or beef liver. Some like it, and some are revolted by it, and there aren't usually a lot of converts one way or the other.
