Best is in the tastes of the beholder. I enjoy C&D English blends with burley in bulk, like Old Joe Krantz, Billy Budd with cigar leaf, Bayou Night, Tuggle Hall, Stratfordshire, and Mountain Camp. Since I'm a burley devotee, I appreciate the inclusion of burley whether as a base or condiment.

Nat Sherman made an excellent English with burley as a condiment, blend 536, which was sold both by the tin and in bulk at their Manhattan store, now long-closed. That's about the most refined version of an English, with or without burley, that I have smoked, though that is highly subjective.

My absolute favorite bulk English lineup is : C&D Mountain Camp, Watch City The Churchwarden, and Wilke Crystal Palace and #400. I’m a newcomer to Wilke, but man do they make some great English blends!

Ok, much better. Now, I can elaborate... C&D Star of the East Flake is a sour yet savory English, like a creamy buttermilk. It is unique in that way, not having had another one that has had that same level of sourness. If smoked slowly, it becomes a delicious taste that you can savor for long periods of time. I really enjoy this one in the winter, especially when cozied up to the fire pit on the backporch.

Mmm, I think I'm going to have to stop looking at that tin on my shelf and pop it pretty soon. You make it sound like something I'll really enjoy.

Edit: after thinking about it, (and checking an online pic) I don't have the flake version...

In your experience / opinion are they the same in flavor or distinctly different?

No, I smoke both. I mean there are differences, but both have that sourness I love.

While not a big Latakia fan unless the mood strikes, I enjoy Byzantium (it has some Perique) while Balkan Supreme is a standard English blend.

Sometimes Habana Daydream hits the spot and other times I dump it after a few puffs. It has cigar leaf and black Cavendish and I need to be in the right mood to enjoy it.
