Force of Nature is a great way to describe Tony. I never met him, but we had some very spirited correspondence regarding pipes and pipe history over the years. Tony's passion for his subject and the depth of his knowledge was and is undeniable. He is missed. RIP

Tony was a long time friend. He and I had been friends since '99 or so. We had many pipe deals buying, selling and trading. He came to visit once down here in FL many years ago. I'll miss his friendly emails and voice. He was well known for his love of Canadians, and wouldn't have any in his Chicago Pipe Show, best of show, collection, that didn't have at least a 4" long shank. Here is one from a pipe show ;

Guys: It turns out that I had NOT saved many of Tony's ebay ads. I had saved selections from his descriptions to add to my Excel Pipe log notes. I learned in writing Reborn Pipe blog entrys, that using descriptors from his ads was a very concise way to gather information about a particular shape or finish.
I went to Ebay today to try and see what could be saved. I struck out on Ebay, most are expired
But, using his Feedback page, I was able to google and locate many of his old ads using the ad title and adding "ebay, mr. can". I saved 40-couple so far (to PDF). Mostly English (shocker!). I'll put these in a Drop-Box folder and post the public link for downloading, should anyone else care to save them.

Al, please do. At the time I first made Tony's acquaintance, he would not turn down a nice long Lovat. Wish I had saved his emails.

I saved 42 Mr Can ebay ads. You can download the folder at this Drop-Box link:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/s6zuv3x3aji17lt/AADHlv1l8_2FQZzS8fdu4Rz9a?dl=0
Also in that folder is a James Upshall catalog scan and some issues of "Pipe Lovers Magazine" from the late 1940's.
I gleaned these from his eBay feedback page - which totals 127 pages! I searched through the first 20 pages.
http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller&userid=mr.can.&iid=-1&de=off&items=25&interval=0&searchInterval=30&mPg=127&page=19
If you want to capture any I missed, try this:

- Highlight the ad title, but NOT the Ebay auction number

- Right click and choose "Search Google"

- In the Google search field, add a comma, then: eBay, Mr Can
That gave me a result most of the time. I save to PDF using Cute PDF (free program).

This is a real sad day for the pipe world. Tony was a big part of the KC Pipe Show. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends. RIP.

Taken from his ebay

ANNOUNCEMENT: MR CAN'S RETIREMENT
The past 10 years I have used the Labor Day Holiday to pay tribute to American Pipe Makers who have labored to produce many of the pipes pursued by collectors. This year is different.
Two weeks ago, I was rushed to the hospital for a perforation of my stomach. My children were summoned and told that I would not survive; 3 emergency surgeries were performed (7, 5 and 2 hours) over four days; and only after 2 weeks of intensive care and hospitalization does it appear that I will survive a while longer (without any prediction of an early demise).
However, the hospital bed was a powerful place for reflection. Mike Reschke encountered health problems after the Chicago Show in May. Yet in his last e-mail to me on May 29, he told me he was getting back on eBay because "I need to be productive to some extent or the lack thereof will be my downfall." Two weeks later he was dead. I plan to go a different direction.
I have enjoyed smoking pipes and tobaccos for over 50 years. Collecting pipes was an all-consuming hobby. And, I was blessed to assemble one of the best collections of this generation. But now, I realize my time and energy was largely misplaced.

Effective immediately I am permanently retired.
Many of you are familiar with my pipes. There are many pictures online. ALL of my pipes are for sale for the same price I paid. I have records for every pipe. However, I do not have time to make lists, take pictures, or type descriptions. You must write me if you want any pipe or group of pipes. I will respond as I am able. However, so all are aware, following my death arrangements have been made to place my collection in an archive to be opened in 100 years for the benefit of some future generation.
Farewell and Happy Pipe Smoking to all my friends on eBay!
I find it interesting that he arranged for the collection to be put away for a 100 years, I wonder if pipe smoking will even be around with the way regulations are going... hopefully it is and there will be some very lucky smokers out there

7ach:
I saw that notice - or most of it - when it first appeared on the Bay. The last paragraph escaped me.
Friday night I read Al's post concerning saving Mr. Can's eBay entries as PDFs and sent Al one of the last auctions Mr. Can posted: a lovely bench made Oom Paul by Fred Diebel out of nearby KC, MO. I'm not a huge fan of the Oom Paul style but the poignancy behind his post and the utmost respect I have for vintage Diebel pipes had me thinking, "Got a birthday coming up and, maybe, between my folks, in-laws, sons, etc. maybe I'll be able to reach out to him...."
Shoulda', woulda', coulda'.
However, so all are aware, following my death arrangements have been made to place my collection in an archive to be opened in 100 years for the benefit of some future generation.
I'm not sorry for my loss. It's a formidable pipe from a well respected, regional pipemaker but there will be others in my near future. Tony Soderman created a very personal time capsule extolling craftsmen and their passionate craftsmanship. Man, that's one hell of a legacy.
For the rest of my life I'll regret not sticking out my mitt to him at the KC pipe show and meeting him. His tables were an English pipe lover's wet dream and the history lessons accompanying his eBay listings were works of art.
He will be missed.

It would be nice to know what funeral home is handling the arrangements.

I've been looking for an obit and can't find one. The only thing I know is that Tony will be Laid to Rest at a church cemetery near his beloved Cabin/Duck Camp in Northern Minnesota in a family ceremony Officiated by The Reverend Rolf.
But, using his Feedback page, I was able to google and locate many of his old ads using the ad title and adding "ebay, mr. can". I saved 40-couple so far (to PDF). Mostly English (shocker!). Good Stuff! Thanks!

Tony told me about a guy in FL who has an amazing collection of shape 32 Canadians. Is this you???? He was very impressed with this collection.

To bad you never got to experience the full roar in person.

His obit was up 6 days ago here:
www.glendenilson.com/obituary/Anthony-Soderman/Mpls-MN/1661357
But it has since been taken down. I viewed it on Tuesday night, although no picture was available.
Dave, I have it cached, I'll make a pdf and send to you via email.

I saw the same thing; it appears in a Google search but not on the funeral homes website
I'd appreciate seeing it too

daveinlax, that very well may have been Dan Merriman.
Dan had quite a collection, and so did I. Still have quite a few 32s and 75s. Tony came over to my digs maybe 10-12 years ago. We swapped some pipes, went to dinner. Had a nice evening.
