Briar Fox

I've almost exclusively been smoking Briar Fox for the past couple of weeks, and I'm nearing the end of my tin. The Fox inspired me to share my thoughts with you all, so I shall.

I really enjoy C&D crumble cakes, very easy to rub out and load. I tend to rub the entire cake out if I'm finishing the tin quickly.



Taste is highly subjective, but for me, the Virginias and burleys in this blend are perfectly balanced. I think it's mostly virginia with a solid foundation of burley. That all comes through with the smoke.

Slightly sweet, tangy, bright citrus, earthy red VA is the most noticeable on the front end and then the burley makes sure you're satisfied and brings in the lower, more full notes to the smoke.

Overall, a very pleasant smoking experience, and I find myself loading bowl after bowl.

This will be a 1lb purchase for me next SP sale.

The old fox is still one of my favorites and remains in rotation. It's such a well-balanced, no-nonsense blend. Every time I smoke it feels reuniting with an old friend again.

It took me about half a dozen smokes for me to really pick up what it was giving me. The more I smoke it the more I get. It's not complex by any means, but it's satisfying and predictable. I can see why C&D produces more Briar Fox than any other blend.

Never had burley other than OTC. After so many posts about it lately, I think I'll pop one of Eight State Burley. Hope that's not heavily topped. Thankfully, one of the none Lat jar has vacated itself.

I love this stuff. I have an 8oz tin that I’m trying to age for a bit. It’s definitely right up there with Pegasus, Haunted Bookshop, and Burley Flake #1 in the C&D classics for me. I think this one has a bit more Virginia than some of their other burley-based blends but don’t quote me on that.

I agree with you on the virginia and the classics status.

I'm sure it will age very well, especially because it's mostly virginias.

The fact that you really like Pegasus, makes sense you don't love Briar fox. I'm the exact opposite. Don't love or hate pegasus.

I buy Briar Fox by the pound. Nothing fancy, just straight ahead pure tobacco taste. Slightly sweet, nutty, no major high or low notes for me, just good tobacco. Has a nice nicotine hit. It suits me as it puts on no pretensions. Good quality tobacco at a fair price.

I received a sample plug of it when it was introduced, and it just didn't have the richness and depth i get from other similarly constructed blends. Maybe I got a poor sample. I'm glad to hear it pleases others. I like so many others in this genre.

I still haven’t tried this one but I do have a few tins I bought back in 2010. I just never got around to smoking it, I hope it ages alright, seems like it should.

Did you smoke it fresh? Also, there has been a few changes to the blend since it was released. You may want to try it again!

This sums it up well for me too! It's on that I will forget about then smoke almost exclusively for a while. Can't quite put my finger on the casing, but it's great. No nonsense, tobacco forward describes it well.

Imagine drinking heavy whipping cream, with a taste of pure tobacco. I'm torn because the palate was nothing to write about, but, the aftertaste, one of my favorites...

So, finally cracked an 8oz tin. This tobacco is really strange to me.. It was extremely mild, but, left an aftertaste that lingered forever. Imagine drinking heavy whipping cream, with a taste of pure tobacco. I'm torn because the palate was nothing to write about, but, the aftertaste, one of my favorites...

Give it some time to breathe if you haven't already, it opens up, but it's nothing spectacular taste wise, it's just great no fuss and consistent tobacco.

I agree with you about the aftertaste, this blend gives me cravings if I stop smoking it for a couple of days.

It’s an underrated blend for those seeking an all day smoke. Nothing particularly special about it, but really rides the line between a simple easy burning blend, and just enough complexity to keep it interesting. I find most CD Va/burs quite boring, but Briar Fox is one of the better ones.
