Is this fairly common for a newbie or is it because the briar isn't "smoked in" yet?
It's a little of both, once you build up some nice cake on your briar you should have better luck, and cobs have always seemed to have a little better draw for me, but the main idea is practice and technique once you are comfortable with your pack work on you cadence in puffing, Good Luck.

P.S. if you are looking for a good instant rotaion of pipes go here you can get 10 cobs for $30 each is a qualilty Missiouri Meerschaum, only thing is you don't know what you will get.
