This is fine and won't be a problem. That's just a nick from the drilling. I doubt it will expand unless you smoke the pipe really hot down there, which you shouldn't do anyway. I would keep it, and I doubt they would even take it back.
Okay sounds good, i’m pretty new to pipe smoking and this is my first “expensive” pipe so i just wanted to take good care of it. i’ve only smoked a few bowls of peterson flake through it so far.

For used pipes with damages due to hot smoking of prior owners I use a drop of sodium silicate mixed with ash or better removed cake from another pipe and apply on the spot. It will withstand much higher temperatures than the briar but the downside is the wood will not soak up moisture there, so apply sparingly (if at all in your case).

I bought it brand new from tobaccopipes.com last week. it tends to get a little hot when I relight, so far i’ve only smoked va in it
Looking at the crazing in that cake, it appears that you're smoking way too hot. Dry your tobacco more, like close to, but not quite, bone dry so it stays lit better, and slow way down on cadence. Aim for the bowl never getting more than a little warm to the touch. Relight when you need to, and avoid trying to smoking down to the absolute bottom of the bowl.
