Looking at the crazing in that cake, it appears that you're smoking way too hot. Dry your tobacco more, like close to, but not quite, bone dry so it stays lit better, and slow way down on cadence. Aim for the bowl never getting more than a little warm to the touch. Relight when you need to, and avoid trying to smoking down to the absolute bottom of the bowl.
how do i dry my tobacco out more? it’s been a wet winter where i live so it’s been pretty humid so it’s hard to dry out my tobacco

i’ve been smoking a lot of peterson flake, should i rub out the whole tin of the flake and then do this or just with the amount for a bowl.
Just the amount you intend to smoke. You could cube cut it and just gravity fill the pipe with no need of drying.

In the old days one could buy a tobacco warming plate to dry out your weed. These days you could use a small hot plate, or put your tobacco in the microwave, between sheets of paper toweling, and nuke for 20 to 30 seconds. I've also set a plate with some tobacco on it on top of a wall heater, or near a floor vent from my central heating. You could put a plate with tobacco on it in your oven at 200˚, though that will leave a scent in the oven and get you divorced...

An old friend of mine who gave me some pointers when I first started smoking a pipe when I was smoking a lot of wet/goopy aromatics at the time. He said that he would put some tobacco on a paper plate or napkin in the morning, which would allow it to dry out while he was at work, and upon returning home to enjoy a pipe, his tobacco would be dry. Now I don't know if you need to let the tobacco sit out all day, but if you know you're going to want to smoke a pipe during the day/evening; let the tobacco sit out for a few hours to let it dry. Or you can try the suggestions given by Sable. Good luck.

As for the pipe itself, I agree with the others that said it was a chip at the drill hole. It doesn't seem like anything to worry about other than slowing down your smoking cadence and don't smoke your bowl all the way down.

I tried what cosmic here suggested. He said he dries his on one of those coffee/tea mug warmers. I already had one, I just put a small ceramic bowl on top and let it heat up a few minutes then put the tobacco in. Depending on how moist the backy is, it'll be dry in a few minutes, you can move it around a little bit and feel how dry it's getting. You'll get the hang of how dry you want it after a few bowls. And then the warmer is already pre-warmed for a mug of tea. You can get these pretty cheap online and probably find them in department stores.
