Don't know how long it's been around, but Bob's Chocolate Flake is easily my all time favorite chocolate aromatic! There's a real dark richness to the chocolate note from that little hint of Latakia that no other chocolate blend seems to capture, and it's got a nice bit of Vitamin N to boot. I also appreciate that BCF isn't even the slightest bit wet or goopy, it's just a masterfully crafted aromatic of the highest caliber if you ask me.

Agree, it's barely noticeable but it's there, I'm also convinced that this little bit of Latakia makes the difference. For me Bob's choc flake smells like dark chocolate, but tastes different, quite complicated, chocolate is just part of it. I get vanilla, almond, tobacco and some chocolate in the back. Great blend.

I and others here prefer to call blends with obvious added flavourings "flavoured", "scented" etc vs "aromatic". All blends are enhanced with stuff to one extent or another, most commonly sugar. What Gawith do is that unlike other manufacturers of "aromatics", they use top quality tobacco as base, and you can actually taste it vs the cheap tasteless Cavendished burley that's common in OTC stuff.

Not sure about the non-wet/sticky part though, the difference again with Gawith is I've found they are best smoked as they come out, no drying time needed - in fact drying takes away a lot. That's unlike say StJames Flake or Full Virginia Flake/Plug which need to be "freshly bone dry" as ChasingEmbers accurately put it to get anything out of them.

Does anyone know how BCF ages in a mason jar? Does it retain its flavor or does it become dimmer with time like other aromatics?

I tried BCF several years ago and hated it, I remember being overwhelmed the lakeland casing. I gave it another shot a few days ago and loved it. I got zero Lakeland flavor and it seemed to have less latakia than I remember. It's going to be a staple in my cellar now.
I had some a couple of months ago that was just a sample IIRC. It had an Ennerdale essence to me that I wasn't prepared for or really cared for at that moment, just too conflicting for my expectation.

I have an unopened tin that I purchased within the last 1-2 years and wonder if that essence will be there??

Interesting reading. I've never tried Bob's and I'm not usually interested in aromatics, but you folks make it sound nice. I decided a while ago I wasn't too into the ennerdale/lakeland thing but perhaps I should give it another try.

Anyway, who's Bob?

The stuff I just smoked was the bulk version and the I got no Lakeland from it at all, it seemed pretty fresh. I smoked it the day it showed in the mail fresh from SP. I also may have smoked my taste buds numb. I've smoked probably 10 bowls of it since then and loved each one more. I think it may be my new daily go to since I can't get Wessex Burley Slice anywhere.

I think Bob was an American? who got them to make up this blend for him on the regular, and he carried it round in a brown paper bag...maybe in the 80s? Please do not quote me. I am not making this up, but I doubt I have the facts all correct. If I read the story on here then someone is bound to correct.

I like it more for the latakia hint and light lakeland vibe, the cocoa is just a tease.

I thought Bob was (is?) GH's chief blender. They asked him to develop a GH version of Samuel Gawith's old chocolate flake. This this is what he came up with and they called it Bob's Flake.
