Seriously; Patrick O'Brian’s “Master and Commander” should be required (hobby) reading.

I need to read his “Aubrey/Maturin” series. In fact I may pick this up a few at a time for my Kindle.

More of a Moby Dick and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea fan myself. Treasure Island was a childhood favorite as well.

Another great Naval-Military historical fiction author that’s kind of underrated (I think) is Dewey Lambdin. His Alan Lewrie books are great quick reads, but they’re not ‘young person’ friendly.

As in? Language? Technicalisms? "Outdated" view of the world?

Sexual content. Mister Lewrie is quite the skirt chaser.

The novels are really fantastic in pretty much every area, from boring ship duty to intense naval combat - it’s all there. Very gritty and realistic.
