It wasn’t always called ‘Black Friday’. I don’t remember when the term first came into general use. It was probably invented by some black hearted advertising type.

It was coined by retailers, as the first time in a while they were "in the black", ie., profitable.

Today, the Saturday after Black Friday, was deemed Shop Small Day, to promote shopping at independent shops around the U.S. I don't know how well that worked, and this wasn't a shopping day for me, but I'll keep it in mind, for my local independent pipe shop and other small retailers we appreciate, like an artisanal bakery we frequent weekly. I think Black Friday missed last year's sales at B&M stores, but buyers more than made up for it online.

Some of the locals shared their fried turtle at an Everglades campsite. More than good. My wife's (late) mom used to specialize in turtle soup in Northern Missouri. I'm not sure what this has to do with Black Friday, but there it is.
