Beautiful pipe with graceful lines, Craig.
Was the "military mount" done by Dunhill or was that a later modification?
Original, I'm sure, but just searching Google, I'm having trouble locating even a single 34/8 to verify my assumption. Retrofitting this would have been very difficult. There's no evidence that the shank had been sanded or refinished in any way. I guess this must just be an extremely rare piece

I'm thinking that you are correct. I looked very closely to enlarged versions of your photos and I could not see anything that lent itself to a mod. If it was..... it was a very good job.

I think this is what I remember reading too. Looks like a birth year Dunhill is probably not a good investment for me.
If you want a BY pipe and can find a Dunhill for a decent price, just do it.
Unless it's a very rare and unsmoked model, the value will not move either way much.
I see burned out hunks of crap with replacement stems selling for $200 plus all the time on ebay.
A decent 1976 Dunhill will be a very good pipe. You will not notice a slight difference in quality seeing you've never had any to compare. The 1970s Dunhills are absolutely serviceable pipes to all but the very informed. If it costs in the $250 range, it will sell for that in another decade with much more use. Dunhills of any condition do REALLY well on the resale market. I've never lost money on a Dunhill....and I've bought some real stinkers on ebay. I let the buyers know the condition and the fact I've never smoked it, and they line up with cash in hand....it's a phenomenon.
Check out Marty Pulvers online shop. He is a straight shooter and has Duhills from $50-$1500 at times. Tell him what you're looking for and he may be able to find it.
It's Pulvers Prior Briars or something like that....just Google Marty Pulvers...hes a legend.:)

Thank you sir, your reply is exactly what I needed. In fact I’m going to go search and save that seller as soon as I’m done here. And I do very much appreciate the insight on the subject. 💯🍻

Sure thing.
Marty is a good guy who will treat you right. And like I said, he often has Dunhills for WELL under $200. He will tell you exactly what's wrong with the pipe, and what's right with the pipe.
And he will not sell you a worthless pipe. Even his $50 Dunhills will have SOME life in them.

So I found this today. but I don’t even know what to look for in a Dunhill. Still haven’t done enough reading and researching. what would be a good model or shape from 1976. Anyone care to give their opinion? I’m not really partial to any particular shape. BTW, if any of you see this and want to buy it I won’t be upset. I don’t really think it’s what I’d buy anyway. Unless one of you said it’s like the home run of Dunhills for this year. Then I’d cons it. Honestly though I think if anything I’ll wait until Marty has something I want. I’m thinking of waiting to send him an email until he has something cheaper I can buy. I think buying something and breaking the ice that way would be better than just sending an email to ask him if he can find me my BY Dunhill.IMG_1976.jpeg

Dunhills are like any other pipe. Make sure the bowl isn't burned out, which means there are no burn holes that will continue to grow. Make sure the rim isn't to scorched or out of round. And if you are paying the going rate make sure the nomenclature is visible and that it has an original stem. These are the two main reasons you will pay well below market value. Also, these are the two things that aren't that important as to being a good smoking pipe.....as long as the remade stem is of good quality, which they usually are. Most people don't replace their Dunhill stem with a lousy replacement.
These are just my observations from buying and selling a number of Dunhills and from what I've picked up from others over the years.
And remember, there are other pipes which can be dated. Again, a good seller, like Marty, can help you with this. He knows how to accurately date many pipes. Petersons, Ashton and many handmade have nomenclature or silver hallmarks that can accurately date a pipe.
A silver banded Peterson may be a much more affordable option.
I will also add that Dunhill is known for the classic Billiard shape. Most of their "special" edition pipes are Billiards.

All 1955's.

  1. Bruyere LB F/T
  2. Shell LB
  3. Shell 60F/T Grp. 4
  4. Root EK Grp. 4
  5. Shell 126 Grp. 3
  6. Tanshell 59 Grp. 4

I became obsessed with finding a 1955, took about 2 years to find the first but then they just kept coming. Probably had another 7 or so but sold them over the years..
