You will need to verify whether or not your 1982 Dunhill is still in fact a 1982 Dunhill. A lot of them have had replacement stems or varying quality.

Dunhill fanboy here; I find them exceptional, but I also love the history of the brand and what dunhill did for pipe smoking. I don't have any from the 80s but my 1978 Group 5 bent egg is one of the best smokers of heavy latakia blends I have in my arsenal. The more you smoke them, the more you'll see the differences between them and other factory pipes. And then you'll buy a Castello and your world be turned upside down realizing you have another fantastic brand to collect.

No better or less than any other upper tier factory pipe.
I have to agree with Chasing Embers on this one. I own one Dunhill (1953) and while it is an exceptional smoking pipe, I have Barlings, Comoy's, a couple of custom-made pipes, etc, that are just as good. I do love all of the history with Dunnie's and how they can be dated, etc. but there are some mighty good pipes out there.

As to the birth year Dunhill, I don't have one in my year (1956) but, I do have a Parker (which is a Dunhill "second" from that year. I've posted a picture of it before, but like a proud poppa, here 'tis again....

I own a 1956 Dunhill (not my birth year). It smokes well but I’ve only brought it out on a few occasions. It’s just part of the collection.

OP - I was with the 82nd Airborne in 1982 and I’m one of the younger guys on this forum. Good luck with your birth year Dunhill.

On edit. The older Dunhill’s claim to be “oil cured” briar.

But like others here, I feel that’s all marketing hype. They’re just pipes as any other.
