I know it’s been talked about before but I’m sort of newish to the forum. I was lucky enough to get a 1982 dunhill of eBay today and was wondering if I should be expecting the quality I have heard so much lore about?
The Dunhills of the 1980s are of mixed quality, but I must say that the three that I own are very good smokers.
No better or less than any other upper tier factory pipe.should be expecting the quality I have heard so much lore about?
I have to agree with Chasing Embers on this one. I own one Dunhill (1953) and while it is an exceptional smoking pipe, I have Barlings, Comoy's, a couple of custom-made pipes, etc, that are just as good. I do love all of the history with Dunnie's and how they can be dated, etc. but there are some mighty good pipes out there. No better or less than any other upper tier factory pipe.
I own a 1956 Dunhill (not my birth year). It smokes well but I’ve only brought it out on a few occasions. It’s just part of the collection. As to the birth year Dunhill, I don't have one in my year (1956) but, I do have a Parker (which is a Dunhill "second" from that year. I've posted a picture of it before, but like a proud poppa, here 'tis again.
I also like your choice of tobacco!
You will need to verify whether or not your 1982 Dunhill is still in fact a 1982 Dunhill. A lot of them have had replacement stems or varying quality

OP - I was with the 82nd Airborne in 1982 and I’m one of the younger guys on this forum. Good luck with your birth year Dunhill.
On edit. The older Dunhill’s claim to be “oil cured” briar.
But like others here, I feel that’s all marketing hype. They’re just pipes as any other.
