With all the hoopla of Christmas Cheer going about, what are the top bulk options for straight Red Virginia tobaccos?

5100 it is. Any delta between that and McCranie's Red Ribbon is purely academic, and the latter is, at least IMHO, the ideal of what a Virginia should be.

5100, as noted above, is the standard in red virginia ribbon. For flake, I'd go with McClellands Blackwoods Flake. Not sure if it comes in bulk though.

Call me an academic, if you must! :) Red Ribbon is a single crop only available in tins while #5100 is a blend of Red Va's available in bulk.
FWIW, #5100 is my favorite blending Virginia and ages fantastically.

Blackwoods Flake is one of my top two or three Virginias.

It would also make a great "consolation prize." The 3.5 oz is almost the same price as McClelland bulk.

is 5100 more of a blending component or a good smoke by itself?

I suppose it'd make a great base for blending. But I think most smoke it straight. I know I do.

There will be plenty of CC to get, the first few shipments are snapped up and then it's readily available until after Christmas, so don't worry too much

I'll be just another voice in the quire, Red Cake is excellent on it's own and it makes a great blending tobacco, too. I blended my own English blend with Red Cake as the VA component and man was it good!

Chasingembers, 5100 was the first Virginia I could successfully smoke. Even now that I am not so much a rookie, I still go to it all the time. It's just that good. I smoke it straight and mix it. I'm sure it will make some shudder that I love it mixed 50/50 with Carter Hall. :puffy:
Edit: I have to add, I love that Carter Hall/5100 in a Country Gentleman!
