If spit and a paper towel don't do the trick, I would live it alone. There are ways to get rid of charred ream, but if it's burnt deep, wood has to be removed.

I could kick myself in the butt. I'm quasi new to pipes. I got an awesome nose warmer for JB. I know you aren't supposed to use a torch. I turned the flame all the way down. I was sure I could point it to the center of the chamber and not cause an issue. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I'll consider it a life lesson and move on. Might take an extra Prozac for the next few days. Question is, what to do. Should I try gently buffing it out with a dremel and wax or leave it the hell alone? Anu suggestions would be much appreciated. The burn is at 11 o'clock. This pipe smokes great.

I am new so don’t take my word for it but I do work on old cars, furniture, and guns. 0000 Steel Wool (make sure it’s 0000) saved me many a day. Very very very fine and can remove rust and residue without scratching. I have no idea about pipes.

I've, unhappily, worked for people that constantly tried. They wanted their imprint on on something, no matter how wrong they were.
My approach to clients who I can see will be 'difficult' is to quote about 3-5 times higher than a reasonable price, this always makes the problem disappear without a trace, and I guess if they ever do take me up on the quote I will at least profit from it!

An example of my gut instinct about 'difficult' clients:

I turned up at a house to take some measurements and was greeted at the door by a fluffy little white yappy dog........with pink bows in its hair. A few more observations of person and home during the next ten minutes confirmed that this was not an easy client, so I quoted 3x the price and never got a reply to the email.
