Kevin needs to address this topic...I would also be interested in hearing is suggestions.

A friend of mine works in a bakery at a casino here in Vegas and he works night shift.
Anywho, my two cents would be to hit college for a buisness major and finance/accounting minor. That would probably be the best help at tackling the how to's of the buisness end of running a tobacco shop. Other than that I'd suggest maybe getting a part time job at a local tobacconist to learn even more. The tobacconist university that Kevin's doing might also be a good thing to get into as well.

The Tobacconist University course is excellent, but as I said before, it is about 90% cigars and 10% pipes.
I would see about getting a job in a retail store.
On your job application, I suggest using proper capitalization and grammar. It would be nice in your forums posts too.
I'm going to get you a Shift key for Christmas.

It sounds like you're out of high school and still trying to find a path for yourself. Good luck. That being said, culinary and/or baking school both sound like good options, especially if those fields interest you. But to not even try either path because you "hate mornings" or it seems "too stressful" is rather immature. Man up, get out there and do something. And if you don't like it, do something else.
As far as becoming a tobacconist, until you own the store or achieve the level of Greg Pease or Russ Oulette, it will probably be a low-paying retail job. There's nothing wrong with that, but you should know what you're getting into.
I also agree with Kevin. Communications skills mean a lot regardless of what field you're going into. Practicing your communications skills in a forum like this will strengthen them for when you really need them (resumes, cover letters, applications, interviews, etc.)
I really do wish you luck, Uber. If it's any consolation, we've all gone through it before so if we can do it, you can, too.

the early morning thing wouldnt work for me. even if i go to bed early i have a had time getting up in the morning. ive just never been a morning person. and i like to cook, but i dont think i could cook in a resturant. you have to be cooking so many thing s at once i dont think i could keep track of them all.and when i want to i can speak quite eloquently. i have what i consider a great vocabulary

I have to agree with what most everyone said, especially Bigvan above me.
If you know that you're passionate about tobacco or baking then you have a great head start on a lot of people who are still trying to figure out what they want to do. I still am not sure what I want to do though I'm about to finish an MS degree. If you want to bake, you enjoy it, then you cannot let "getting up early" and "not being a morning person" get in the way of that. If you choose another path that appears easier, you will most likely regret it. Not too many people get to make a living doing what they love.
I suggest you try and find a job as a baker, and take it seriously. Yes, it will be hard to wake up for work sometimes (I worked as a baker in high school for a while), but you will get used to it. If you look at it with an attitude that it is a chore, you don't really need the money that bad, you're not a morning person, etc... you will end up quitting, not getting to work on time, or getting fired. It would be a shame to do if you really do enjoy the job. In the meantime you could be saving some money and seeking out a tobacconist that you could work at/apprentice with in the future...
Sorry for the rant. I'm done :puffy:

Not to beat a dead horse, but capitalization and the proper use of apostrophes are MAJOR elements of correct grammar....... if you can't show enough effort to properly write a post than many of the members here will not make an effort to take you seriously...... I guess what all of us "experienced " members are saying that if you use these all the time it will become second nature to you. Just trying to pass along some "pearls of wisdom!!"
That being said I am glad to see the younger members that have joined as it adds a greater vitality to the entire forum!

Uber, please don't think we're piling on, we're just trying to help. And personally, I wish I had followed the advice offered above when I was your age.

Uber.... I am ABSOLUTELY not piling on just to clarify!!! All these little things that you can adjust now will pay HUGE dividends as you get older!!!
I have been following this thread because it is interesting to hear your thoughts as they relate to mine at your age. Follow your heart now as it becomes almost impossible to once you have the responsibilities that come with "growing up!!"

Follow your heart now

thats what my dad has always told me. he said he could careless what i do for a living as long as i enjoy it. i could be a ditch digger for all he cares, as long as im happy with it. he also said, and i agree with him on this, that the tobacco industry will never truly die. people have been smoking basically since they could control fire. it may not have been tobacco that they smoked, but they smoked nonetheless. there will always be smokers and lovers of tobacco, and someone needs to cater to their needs.and let face it, no one is getting any younger. at some point someone has too replace them.im not saying it should be me or that it will be me, im just saying it has to happen eventually

This seriously drives me nuts, I consistently skip your posts because of it (no offence intended, of course), and that makes me sad. As for your conundrum, I am 100% with big van on the last page.

I have good communication skills when i want to. If I chose to i can speak and write quite well. I had a 12th grade reading level in the 4th grade, and no I'm not making this up. As for what bigvan said about the stress of the kitchen i understand it sounds immature, but I've cooked whole meals before and have a bit of a hard time watching everything at once. That is just one family's meal. i don't think i could do more then that at once.I just cant focus on that many things at once. I never have.I made sure to capitalize this time.

If you were to go to school to become a baker, your body would naturally adjust to the change in sleeping schedules, if you went to school for culinary arts, you would develop the skills needed to survive in a kitchen. If you were born with these skills and abilities, you wouldn't need to worry about it, but like the rest of us, you have to learn them.

So what's your plan? If there are nothing but fast food opportunities in your town, are you going to stay there and flip burgers? Again, it's an honest day's work and there's nothing wrong with it, but it probably won't allow you much "pipe and tobacco money". It's your choice.
Uber, I generally don't care for young people but you seem like a bright and confident young man. You are entering the brightest, fastest, most dangerous, most exciting part of your life. Don't sit on the sidelines feeling you "can't" do something, or you're "not good at" something. Keep trying. Learn as much as you can, ask questions then shut up and listen to the answers. And if you don't like your situation, change it.
Personally I've had a few COLOSSAL failures in my life, but the real shame comes from the times when I did NOTHING.
