Hi everyone, hope you’re all well?

Having done a little research, there are several tobaccos I would love to try, but unfortunately (and typically) they're only available in the US. What do others in the UK for example get around this - do I need a friendly fellow pipe smoker in the US to send me some?

Haunted bookshop is one example ;)

Cheers!

I’m a little confused… I just checked, and you should be able to order this blend directly from SmokingPipes.com. According to their web site, they ship tobacco products to the UK. Is that not true?

Looks to be the case.

Not France though. The cradle of the briar pipe and they don't allow tobacco shipments.

Yes, indeed....having checked it seems it's not worth the trouble regarding customs, handling charges and the inordinate wait for delivery....

Cornell & Diehls Autumn Evening is starting to look very elusive now :(

I’m in the US and have shipped to a friend in the UK. My last shipment was held up by customs and my friend received a customs charge he’d have to pay before Royal Mail would deliver. Because it was a gift, I went onto the site and paid it for him. The customs charge was greater than the value of tobacco I sent him. My conclusion, he’s a great guy and all, but I’ll never do that again. I’ll just bring it in my carry-on next time I come over.

I’m a little confused. Perhaps you can help me understand. In your original post, you pondered the possibility of a piper in the US sending you some delicious baccy yet in a later response you seemed to express disinterest in that scenario. I’m happy to help you in your search for Autumn Evening if you wish, I’m just looking for clarification of your position.

Yes, thats correct......I suspect you may well have missed the point here my friend from Alabama. Not to worry, have a wonderful day!
I may be totally misunderstanding here, but I think the confusion is the wait time, customs inspection and potential customs fees exist regardless on if that package comes from smoking pipes or an individual.

If both pathways are equal, there's no point in someone trying mail you a package. Just order it from the source and skip any middle man. You are adding complexity for no benefit.

Yep, that was my initial query, and hope - only to discover subsequently that there is little difference in terms of shipping cost whether sent from a business or a private individual. I also understand that shipping can take as much as two months, or more as that doesn't factor in delays at customs etc.....

So my initial quandary was, and still is, being unable to source Cornel & Diehl Autumn Evening (for example) here in the UK. Then, would it be cheaper and maybe quicker to have it sent as a 'gift' from a kind individual in the US?

It seems that the answer is a resounding .......'No'!

Hmmm....It's really not difficult to assimilate that I now understand something that I didn't earlier....is it.....surely????

Lets try this way eh?
  • Question: "What do others in the UK do for example to get around this - do I need a friendly fellow pipe smoker in the US to send me some?"
  • Answer: "No, the cost and delivery time will be the same whether from an individual or a business"
  • Response: Oh, ok thanks

There you go....happy days! 🤔

I understand. Thanks for clarifying.
