yay interesting. I just recently purchased a garmin forerunner 305 and planning to use it for running and road cycling. After hearing these responses i guess a cigar or two bowls of pipe tobacco a week wouldnt hurt.

I work out at least 6-7 times a week with 3-4 of those days being cardio & I haven't noticed any diminished lung or aerobic capacity. I smoke at least 2-3 bowls a day & at least one of those daily smokes are from a magnum or giant pipe. I think it's true that the key point here is not inhaling the smoke. Oh, that & pipe smokers are AWESOME! Have fun!

I do 3 to 4 martial arts workouts per week. Which is more workouts than I smoke bowls per week... I don't inhale, so I wouldn't expect a problem with the lungs. If I'm laboring in the class, I chalk it up to being almost 40, well over 200 pounds and playing with the younger kids. If I wanted to boost my performance, I'd drop another 20 pounds, not my pipe!

Ugh you suck Lawrence i never got to go to Kaneohe Bay. Got stuck in Cherry Point the whole time. But in my days in the Corps i could run my 3 mile PFT in 18:27. Smoke 3 and a half packs of Camel Wides a day. And generally had one before the run and just after finishing the run =p.

I'm not a "gym rat," but I swim at least 1km per workout, 5-7 days/week. I've gone through periods of cross-training (weight-lifting, yoga, running), too. Never noticed any effects from smoking my pipe (even when I smoke a bowl or two per day). Swimming has been my main form of exercise since my late teens, and my pipe has honestly never influenced my cardiovascular capacity in any negative way at all. I don't inhale, of course, and rarely smoke more than 3 bowls in a single day.

Thom that's where I did my TACAN and IFF training. I played a lot of chess, drank way too much beer, like you, smoked like a freight train, and ran 1st Class PFT's. Best shape of my life. Go figure. Of course the climate there is absolutely perfect.

I just started smoking pipes again after a 30 year layoff. I was smoking about 3 packs of cigs a day and really enjoyed my pipe. But my mindset back then was to quit everything and take up exercise. I was such a wreck back then it made sense. I've run about 25 marathons in that time and still run a few times a week with a long run on weekends. Just got through a 5 mile run. I'm 63 years old. My pattern is about a bowl a night and so far it hasn't affected the way I feel and the way I feel after a run, which is great. I always knew I going to start back because I held onto my two pipe tools. Really enjoying it, learning all the new tobaccos, getting my mouth used to smoking again, the wonderful ritual, the smell of the pipes, the leather pouches and the tobaccos of course. We didn't have anything like this forum back in the day. Looking forward to a bowl of Orlik Golden Sliced after I eat and reading the forum.

Back in the day, I ran 10 miles a day, 7.5 minutes per mile, and smoked about 5 bowls of Balkan Sobranie daily. Until my degenerative spinal disease got too bad, I biked 50 miles daily, or worked out equivalently in the gym. By that time, I was smoking 2 bowls daily. Yeah, my pipe smoking interfered with my ability to exercise. Right. :puffy:

I did endurance mountain bike racing ... courses such as the Vail 100, Brian Head 100, 24-Hour races, etc.
Never suffered due to smoking, but also never included cigs.
Once, during the "24-hours in the Old Pueblo" race, the pipe actually saved my sanity! :)
At 0300, with 15 hours in and 9 to go, I stopped in the middle of the desert and smoked some Carter Hall.
It got my mind back in tune and took some of the thoughts away from the exhaustion and pain.

Too funny Dan, who were all those people?????? :nana:
I smoke maybe 2-3 bowls per week from April-July. I also cycle about 100 miles per week during this time. I increase to almost 150 mi per week from Aug-Sep. Once my MS 150 ride is over at the end of Sept my cycling will probably drop to 60 miles per week and my smoking will increase to 5 bowls per week. I never felt any effect, positive or negative, from smoking a pipe. I did notice some breathing issues on high intensity rides if I had a cigar the night before, although I don't inhale so I don't know how to assess that.

I used to be a gym rat, high school and college athlete. I also have asthma. Smoking a pipe after college and cigars here and there since high school. Still get exercise but no where near as hard, but I never felt different. Whew... Now that I'm done typing I gotta catch my breath.
But seriously, I didn't notice anything. Since most of our hobbyist don't inhale it shouldn't be too detrimental. Heart rate affected by the nicotine would problably be the only change noticeable. Although, many factors like age, other health issues and such also come into play. I hope to get back into the daily gym routine in the nearby future. I'll report back then if I survive.

I'm 66 and have smoked cigs most of my life. I've also attempted to stay active. Cigs definitely reduced my lung capacity. These days I play softball 3x a week. Since I've quit the cigs and taken up the bowl, my breathing and stamina have improved noticeably. I walk 2 quick miles daily before sunrise, and have started running portions of my route with the goal to run the entire way. A scheduled cystoscopy the first week of Oct. may change the script.
I sometimes have a pipe going as I do resistance band exercises for my arms, chest and shoulders.
