I wouldn't. When friends ask me be getting into pipes I tell them to go to our local B&M and put their nose in a all of the bulk blends and take home a bunch that catch their interest.

I started with 965 and MacB Navy Flake in a straight billiard.
965 got a 3 pinch pack and MacB Navy Flake got folded and stuffed. 965 always smoked pretty easily but the Navy Flake took some practice before I was able to have a good smoke constantly.

I would actually go with Amphora Burley blend. Very tasty, mechanically easy, harder to get a tongue bite and readily available. I think it will be great for a beginner. Amphora also has a nice sampler pack with several different types of blends.

As long as a new pipeman avoids heavily cased aromatics (such as Paladin, etc.), they should try any tobacco that strikes their fancy.
My personal recommendation for an early favorite candidate has always been Granger....a very good dog.
Packing techniques are things that come with practice. I just tell people that if you can't get it lit or get a good draw, dump it into an ashtray and try again. This gets to be fun after awhile.
