So from time to time I desire a sweet and tasty non traditional smoke. I have been trying different aros to satisfy this weird and unique hunger. Problem is it’s just not working! I have tried Vaun land, Peterson and many others. They all taste empty and similar to a black and mild. With that said I admit the ONLY aro I have smoked and absolutely enjoyed was Nordings Labrador. Great nutty sweet smoke with quality leaf that didn’t fade at the end. I have some Rattarys exotic orange on the way so we will see how that goes. Does any one have suggestions?

I also tried to bring Aromatics into my rotation from time to time not finding what I was looking for - but you may want to try Boswell blends if you have not already - pretty good stuff... it smells so good I want to eat it perhaps more than smoke it -
Christmas Cookie was my fav out of their blends;

I would suggest for you to get John Aylesbury 40 Years Edition Pipe Tobacco- It`s a great Aromatic tobacco not too wet and you can taste the tobacco in it. I would also recommend to stay away from Molto Dolce-This tobacco put me off aromatics for few months because of the way it smells taste and feels- Smells and Tastes like outdated McDonald sugary syrup and feels wet and sticky you need to wash your hands after filling up the bowl. it will also ghost your pipe. This is based on my opinion only, a lot of people love this tobacco, I actually bought it because of raving reviews and a decent price...

When I get the occasional craving, I will mix an aromatic with a fuller flavored tobacco that I know I enjoy. For instance, if I am in the mood for vanilla and Burley, I will put a pinch of Lane BCA in with some C&D Pegasus. I can actually taste tobacco, but the added aromatic satisfies the sweet tooth. Might be worth a shot?

We have a lot of fairly robust aromatics in the UK/Ireland - see Erinmore Flake, St. Bruno Flake, Condor Long Cut, any of the Lakelands from SG or G&H. There's also one or two ones that are harder to get outside a UK supermarket e.g. Player's Whisky RR. We smoke mostly aromatics in the UK and have done for centuries, it's just that the toppings and casings mostly compliment the Virginia forward/Burley/Dark Fired Kentucky blend we tend to prefer. Erinmore is my favourite aromatic with a kind of apricot flavour supporting the virginias. The heavily cased Lakelands are more of an acquired taste but I think they're fun to smoke.
If you'd rather a more modern aromaticI think Rattray's Bagpiper's Dream is very nice. Some brands like that make high quality aromatics

Rather than making an abrupt transition to a full-blown aromatic, let your taste buds creep up on the genre by going with a more natural blend like F&T's Cut Virginia Plug, Savinelli's Brunello , or Stokkebye's Luxury Twist Flake.

I recently got into aro's and I really like Molto Dolce. To me it is nice and sweet and tastes like Caramel. I have a big sweet tooth and Cult Blood Red Moon really satisfies it. It actually tastes like Cherry. It burns great right out of the tin for me.

For a straight Dark Virginia I would go with Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake. It has a nice molasses thing going on and is real tasty. If you can find it Astleys no 44 and no 109 have a sweet taste to me.

I can taste the tobacco in all of these, none are goopy and most are readily available.

I would suggest looking at the SG or G&H blends. I would start with G&H Bob's chocolate flake as it is really a crossover between Virginia/Latakia and aromatic, then trying Ennerdale for a strong lakeland aromatic flavour and finally if you like strong tobacco trying 1792 flake (in a small bowl as it is really one of the strongest in the nic dept).

Wait a few years. Aros are definitely for when you have several years of pipe smoking under your belt.

chasing, no joke. I never smoked an aromatic in the first dozen or so years. I first tried them with a dabbling of Boswell aro's in 2012. I liked the flavors but for some reason they dried my mouth real bad(possible reaction to the PG?). I then tried a few over a year ago and found some I really enjoyed and had no issue with dry mouth. I think having the right pipes makes a difference. I smoke all my non flake aro's in my collection of Willmer AAA Straight Grain pipes. They are all group 6-ODA and I think the size and the quality of the wood makes a difference.
My flake aro's I smoke in my normal flake pipes and I get nice flavors from them. I never thought I would be an aro smoker but damn there are some good ones out there. I just put in an order with smokingpipes for a few flakes I haven't tried and I added a couple of samples of aro's. Here is what I grabbed.

Sutliff

Z92 Vanilla Custard

McClelland

401 - Darkest Caramel

And a pouch of Mixture No. 79

I have never smoked 79 but I remember one of my granfathers smoking it when I was a kid so I have to check it out, despite all the bad press it gets.

I agree with Harris on Sutliff's Molto Dolce and Vanilla Custard.
To add two more...my top two for aros which smell and taste good are Lane Black Raspberry, and Sutliff Barbados Plantation.

Yeah, it took about two decades here. Now, every aro I smoke tastes the way it smells. Mixture 79 fan here.

I will add to the list with C&D's Autumn Evening, and D&R's London Dock. Very dry blends, and very user friendly.

chasingembers - speaking of Autumn Evening, I discovered what gave me that nasty gunk from my AE bowl (related to another post we discussed).....
It was a balmy 20 degrees F outside that night, so I suspect it was the cold weather that fused the sticky mess in my bowl. I happened to smoke a different blend in a different pipe a few days later (still as cold outside) and it did the same thing.
+! for Royal Yacht and PS Luxury Twist Flake. Both solid contenders in my rotation.
