I discovered what gave me that nasty gunk from my AE bowl (related to another post we discussed).....
It was a balmy 20 degrees F outside that night, so I suspect it was the cold weather that fused the sticky mess in my bowl. I happened to smoke a different blend in a different pipe a few days later (still as cold outside) and it did the same thing.
Now that is interesting. Good detective work!

In my 'umble opinion, you can try too hard to like aromatics, or get back to them if you started with them. You have to sort of trip over them and be taken by surprise. They must be tobacco forward for me. Currently, I like Erin Go Braugh, SWR Aromatic, Iwan Ries Three Star Blue, Edward G. Robinson, PS Pistachio, among others. Not all are in my rotation, but may be from time to time. I still favor fuller strength non-aros, but I no longer feel aromatics are pipe tobacco with training wheels. They are more a change-up for the sophisticated experienced smoker. Not that I exactly fit the category.

I think it's hard to find a good aromatic these days. It would be difficult to prove but I bet many tobaccos are excessively aromatized with who knows what stuff to hide a non quality leaf.

I've tried several MacBarens which seemed to be quite tasty but one never knows... Are aromas really natural, is a tobacco yield from last year the same as this year, does one tin or pouch contain better leaves than the other one?

We have a lot of fairly robust aromatics in the UK/Ireland - see Erinmore Flake, St. Bruno Flake, Condor Long Cut, any of the Lakelands from SG or G&H. There's also one or two ones that are harder to get outside a UK supermarket e.g. Player's Whisky RR. We smoke mostly aromatics in the UK and have done for centuries, it's just that the toppings and casings mostly compliment the Virginia forward/Burley/Dark Fired Kentucky blend we tend to prefer. Erinmore is my favourite aromatic with a kind of apricot flavour supporting the virginias. The heavily cased Lakelands are more of an acquired taste but I think they're fun to smoke.
BINGO!!!

You need to try Peterson University Flake, Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky and Erinmore Flake. That should do it for you.

You might enjoy W.O. Larsen. Signature is very fine indeed. I would also recommend Iwan Ries Banner Light.

That crossed my mind too. Have one jared until my taste (or tobacco) changes, don't like it since it's so profumed, not to mention a high price in comparison to other aromatics.

But it's exactly what you're looking for: sweet and tasty and it doesn't fade out at the end. A typical danish aromatic, tasting like a candy.

I recommend H&H Chatham Manor, Mac Baren Navy Flake, and Mac Baren Vanilla Cream Flake.
You might try smoking some of the more subtle/light aros in a different pipe. For example, when I smoke University Flake in my Peterson Darwin, it tastes completely different from when I smoke it in other pipes and the berry flavor stands out a little more. I make it a rule to smoke a blend in five different pipes before making a judgment call.

Wow! Lots of suggestions here. Thanks for the ton of feedback! Gonna have to take my time with this. I have to keep my impulse in check or I will just buy one of everything! The vanillas, at least MacBarens, I wasn’t a fan of. Loved Squadron Leader but I thought was a mild English? Only frogs I have tried was the Cellar and I enjoyed that one. It was a very sweet English taste that was light on the Latakia to my taste buds. Been meaning to try the rest of the series. The C&D Autumn Evening’s title sells it for me to at least try. I am currently sipping on Nordings Retriever. So far it seems to be a tasty smoke but unlike the Labrador it seems to lose its punch after half the bowl. I have tried Cults Blood Moon and unfortunately I would have to hang my head on that one. I have some Exotic Orange on the way. My fear with the Rattarys is expectations. It seems that it’s scarcity and rave reviews might bolster it over the top only to let me down due to its hype. Speaking of expectations, what I am really looking forward to is my 10 year old aged Hal O the Wynd that should be here with my next mail call. To top it off it should be accompanied by a Mark Tinsky smooth bent Dublin! I also went full retard and just bought a brand new Castillo straight Dublin kkkk. They were selling it for 325 and I got it for 275. Now I need to not web shop for at least a month! I also am a bit ashamed to say I am waiting on a group 3 full bent Dublin with Cumberland stem 2005 Dunhill I picked up here on the forums... I need help. I blame all of you for being enablers and feeding this beast of a habit!

Well put Molach 95.
An aromatic needn't have the aroma of strawberries, cherries etc to be one.
