Semi-aros like University Flake or Erinmore are ok now and again, Ennerdale Flake for the full enchilada. But I have so much non-aro, as such, to try, they seldom get my attention.

Strictly speaking, English blends are aromatics, but they're also only occasional smokes for me at the moment.

I just got to the point that there wasn't enough flavor difference in non aromatics of the same genre to warrant any further interest. Aromatics can taste like anything I'd want.

I like aros as a change of pace. Tried to love them when starting but they never really grabbed my attention like English and Balkan blends, or a good VA, etc. I did go to a pipe club where one member smoked 1Q exclusively and it worked for him. To paraphrase Yukon Cornelius, "you smoke what you like and I'll smoke what I like...GAAAH!"

I'm fine with aromatics--but I'm extremely picky about which ones I smoke. Setting aside Lakelands (love them), I have a handful that I do enjoy. Several recently met their demise--Maple Shadows and H&H Burley Kake being the big ones--but I dig the Gawith style of aromatics (like American Delight), a couple aromatic English blends, and C&D's John Marr (and Granby Station). I never liked Sutliff's overly goopy aromatics, though they smell great, or any of Lane's either. If I did want one in the Sutliff style, I'd probably just get something from Boswell's; I was gifted a couple ounces of Cupcake last year and it made my entire office smell great while still in the baggie!

I enjoyed John Marr quite a bit. I also keep some RLZp-6 around for the rare occasion I want to revisit the past when my first pipe tobacco was Capt Black.

This is why I started on some heavier aromatics. Ive always liked the lighter ones like MacBaren blends....Va#1 is probably my deserted island blend.
But many years of straight Vas, Burleys, and Latakia blends, they became kinda like cigars to me. The reason I switched from mainly cigars to mainly pipes was because the cigars were becoming boring. Very subtle flavor differences while paying $6-$20 a stick.
Pipes gave me a bunch more variety. But after a couple decades of Virginias, they start to become boring. There are lots of standouts....Va#1, FVF, DFK.....but I'll hear about a FANTASTIC blend, pay $15 for a tin, and it's just tastes like many other blends.
Good Danish or English aromatics taste like tobacco, but have something extra....which I apparently like.
When I started on pipes, my first pound purchase was Smokers Pride Cherry. That turned me off until I tried MacBaren Cube and WO Larsen Signature.

I have officially decided aromatics is just not for me. Congrats to those who enjoy them. I have made this decision several times before but then get pulled in again.
There's this undercurrent to some pipe tobacco discussions that in order "to get it" one must subject oneself to repeat smoking of a type that you don't like. Eventually "you will get it." Be it aromatics or latakia...

I reject that sort of thinking - smoke what you like and no explanation required for not liking something. Aromatics not for you? Good riddance!

I think the general consensus isn't that you will enjoy it. But not to write it off forever, because taste change and pallets develop and things that are interesting get boring and things that are boring can become interesting again.

If by general consensus you mean the people who post on forums such as this - perhaps. If you mean people who actually smoke overall - then you would be wrong. Which begs the question- is it likely that people who post on forums ….
