As someone who smokes everything be it aromatic or otherwise, there are LOTS of aromatic blends which taste great. I have been smoking Mac Baren Scottish Blend since the last 48 hours and it has perfect body. Rattray's Bagpiper's Dream is another fantastic tobacco blend with awesome room note and PERFECT taste/body. GL Pease Virginia Cream is another great aromatic which smells and tastes good.
All the above mentioned aromatics, have good body/strength and enough flavor for those times when you don't really want people to smell burnt leather in a group but calm them down with a subtle aroma of vanilla, rum, nuts whatever the aroma profile is of the blend.
It's a myth that aromatics only smell good but don't taste great; unless someone is smoking cheap and crappy leaves there is no other excuse.
Plus there's nothing wrong in trying to please the crowd as long as it's not your only priority.
Cheers,

Chris

Absolutely right Chris, I only wondered about those smokers who felt obliged to smoke aromatics, perhaps even to the point of convincing themselves they were enjoying the smoke rather than upset any applecarts by smoking what they really wanted to smoke.

Jay.

I smoke primarily Virginia blends of one sort or another. I don't smoke any Latakia blends, and I have a low tolerance for dark fired Kentucky. I despise Lakelands. I love sojourning with burley on occasion. I have my own reasons for those very personally subjective decisions (the primary one of which should be blindingly obvious to anyone who is partial to making his or her own choices about such things) that I suspect aren't particularly important to anyone else making similar decisions for themselves. Thus I ask, respectfully and without sarcasm: Why wouldn't X just assume that the blends Y smokes are the blends Y prefers to smoke? End of story.

Davet, I'm assuming that not offending/pleasing those people in one's vicinity could very well feature among the reasons one chooses to smoke what one smokes at a particular time and in a particular place

When I first started smoking a pipe, I was obsessed with finding a tobacco that had a good roomnote and also tasted good, but that combination proved hard to find. I started smoking a pipe mainly because I was wanting to get off cigarettes and dip but I knew that I wanted to still enjoy tobacco some how. I've always loved the smell of a pipe and I wanted to put off that same aroma while I smoked my pipe but I quickly realized that I didn't really care what the roomnote smelled like just as long as I enjoy the smoke. The weird thing is I get complimented on all kinds of weird blends that I thought would never, in a million years smell good to nonesmokers. Almost every time I light up Old Joe Krantz I get a compliment from the female species on how much they love the smell of my pipe. I've gotten that with Elizabethan Mixture, 3 Oaks Syrian, Warrior Plug, and McConnell's Latakia FLake... Since I have no idea what my pipe smells like to others, I've stopped worrying about it and just smoke what I like. I really think the majority of all pipe tobaccos smell good because they are cased with sugars or licorice.

You could be onto something there Hawky but I do wonder what percentage of what a non smoker smells is casing and what percentage the tobacco itself, particularly regards non aromatic blends.

I smoke mainly VAs, Lats, and some aros. But I do confess, I smoke aromatics BECAUSE my wife lets me get away w/ it in the house. VAs are my favorite, and those are the ones my wife is least tolerable of. I keep a good supply of Lane 1Q, and Boswells makes an aro w/ a nice dose of Lat in it called "The Bear", which is good when company is over. Surprisingly my wife doesn't mind English blends. So I can smoke a John Cotton or Frog Morton in the house, and it has an almost campfire type smell, which she loves.
