Doesn’t J Mouton make filter pipes upon request? I though I saw something on YT where he mentions it. I enjoy his YT videos.

I guess if you're just running pipes out at whatever spec you run pipes out at it's a bigger deal. If you are doing one-off custom stuff, I can't see how it's that much of a pain to drill a hole 5/16" instead of 5/32". Probably takes me 10 extrad minutes all told to make a filter pipe. I can understand the snobby side though, I mean, I get some guys like filters, but what happened to me when I started smoking good quality unfiltered pipes, built well, like Castellos, is I never wanted to see a filter again. So I think there's a little bit of "Oh well go buy a savinelli then." attitude in carving circles. I think it's difficult for us non-filter users to see filtered pipes as offering anywhere near as good an experience - "A filter? Oh god, why not smoke a cigarette then?" you know? And it's wrong, I get what filters do and why some guys prefer them. And it's like any other choice in pipes, you like a big pipe, I like a small pipe, doesn't make one of us wrong.
What I find amusing is there is a connection I have discovered in this aspect.

from what I have read, the tongue, after smoking continiously for a while, builds a layer of protection from tobacco juices and junk sort of like a filter. It has also shown that tobacco smokers tongue will eventually lose or “kill” tasting receptors in the tongue. Now imagine if those people, who have been smoking unfiltered pipes and arguably cigars and/or cigarettes also for decades, go back to trying filters again? It would be just like smoking hot air. There is no shame in that too, it is mutual respect and life is all good and dandy.

There is no shame in trying filters from the beginning too. You are not only and most probably are doing it in a healthier way, and increasing the quality of your life, you are also for sure are protecting your tongue from all the junk that tobacco brings. I have seen some people suggest you need to get a ”pipe tongue” that would take a couple of months of smoking hot, acrid, tongue bite filled smokes. Basically building the protective tongue layer.

So at the end, it is a sad story with misunderstanding. I have pipes that regardless with filters, smoke bad. And there are those that smoke wonderfully. So a castello could be just a really good pipe, and most likely it is. But I find it hard that a specific non-filtered brand will out-do all pipes. I have a savinelli prince and a 1994 ashton all filtered that will most probably outsmoke all the pipes I have. There are good pipes and bad ones, even some made out of unicorn bones, but it doesn’t matter if there is a filter in between the stem and the unicorn bones briar-thing. That is the whole point.
