I don't have an actual cellar, as I'm sure most of us here don't. That being said I don't actually "cellar" tobacco either.

What I do is buy one or two tins of MANY different tobaccos that I am curious to try, so I end up with a bunch of jars and tins that will inevitably gain some age as they await their demise.

So it's not intentional, but rather a side effect of me wanting to try various blends. I always envision myself narrowing it down to just a couple VAs, a couple VaPers, and a couple English blends, but lately I wonder if that'll ever actually happen
That is actually how I started cellaring. I thought the same, but with so many blends out there and the itch to try a different one. It’s going to be months or years before I get back around to them.

I did find a few that I liked and got more in bulk to jar or be a continuous go to blend.

I have a cellar but only two open tins. I should have cellared, while I could afford it, during my almost 40 years pipe smoking career but not until recently have I considered doing it, after being influenced by joining forums:)
I don’t remember it being a subject in the heydays of pipe smoking, decades ago. Guess most of us, then thought tobacco should preferably be smoked fresh, ha ha!

I didn’t ever buy more than I was currently smoking until McClelland closed down and I was left without all of my favorite tobaccos. I used to think cellaring was just a specific preference for some, but after that hard lesson, I started buying two of whatever I was ordering, to slowly build up a supply of things that I liked in case something like that ever happened again.

Now I have an okay supply of tobaccos I like and I’m happy about that.

I buy two of every tin and split my bulk down into jars. One for now and one for later. That way I don’t feel like I am buying and not enjoying anything now. Drives my wife crazy. Gonna need a storage unit at some point.

My thoughts on the subject:
The Ants & the Grasshopper
the-ants-and-the-grasshopper.jpg

One bright day in late autumn a family of Ants were bustling about in the warm sunshine, taking inventory of the tobacco they had cellared before the FDA imposition, when a jittery Grasshopper, his fiddle under his arm, came up and humbly begged for a tin of Esoterica.
"What!" cried the Ants in surprise, "haven't you stored anything away for the winter? What in the world were you doing all last summer?"
"I didn't have time to store up any tobacco," whined the Grasshopper; "I was so busy making music that before I knew it the summer was gone."
The Ants shrugged their shoulders in disgust.
"Making music, were you?" they cried. "Very well; now dance!" And they turned their backs on the Grasshopper and went on with their work.

I also buy tins X2 of new tobaccos i want to try which means a lot of times I end up with 1 tin in the cabinet for later down the road. Stuff that can be hard to get that I really like such as Hal O The Wynd can be hard to to find so, when I come across it I will buy as much as I can afford to put up.

I've done this as well from time to time. Now I have a bunch of single tins like Volcano TongueBurn #1, Dental Nightmare Mixture, Old ToothDarkener, and SootWeep Special Edition (the Everclear of Tobacco)!

Yeah, learned that lesson early on! If is seems kinda sketchy and not 80% or better in my taste wheelhouse I don’t even buy any tins. Fortunately I don’t currently have any tins of stuff that I wouldn’t smoke again;)

Ha ha! I guess I am a grasshopper!

To add pain to my earlier mentioned ignorance, I was some years ago, through friends, gifted a fine, decades old tobacco cellar from a late ant. It consisted of dozens of unopened tins from late factories.
I found them just as good (or better) than the fresh tins I usually bought. Gave a few tins away and immediately smoked the rest till my cellar was again empty....I didn’t know at that time what I know today.
