I thought "japanimation" was lame until a friend let me borrow Ninja Scroll, Akira, and Ghost in the Shell in 2008 or so. Then I was off to the races. The darkest gnarliest bloodiest stuff I could find all the way to K-On! I've kind of fallen off the last 5 years.
Frieren was the most recent thing I've watched that I really enjoyed.

Honestly to me it's just another genre that ranges from utter tripe to genuine masterpieces.
This is how I feel about it too.

Usually when people ask, I just don't say anything. It's like "Doctor Who"... I liked the show, but it wasn't my whole personality and the worst is someone asking then wanting to talk about what is or is not cannon, theories, etc. It's like "woah, chill, I just found the show entertaining, it isn't that serious". You just never know when someone does ask, which type of person/fan they are.

Same happens with anything really. But with anime, I don't know how to get across to fanboys that I like some because it's good, not because it's specifically anime. Granted, I don't look at it with the same lense as I would a live-action TV show, but I don't look at TV-shows with the same lense as feature-length motion pictures, and none with the same lense as books. And there are a lot of anime that would only work in that medium and wouldn't translate to live-action or even just American-style animation.

More of a colloquialism than a genre it's just the Japanese term for cartoon like manga is for comic book or graphic novel. As such it is broken into many genres. In other ways it is a descriptor to the style but gray areas pop up like Avatar.

School festivals must be a pretty big thing in Japan, as so many animes use one or more episodes out of 12 or 13 for that cliché. Same thing for Beach episodes and their "fan service" themes.

It was Cowboy BeBop that got me first, then Ghost in the Shell. When first viewed back in the day the animation quality was jaw drooping and the story lines too. Late nights on Adult Swim!

Just tried to watch something with the English title of The Twelve Kingdoms and after the first two of 45 episodes (that I'm aware of) have enabled me to give a one word review:

TEDIOUS ! ! ! ! !

Near a decade ago (and now I feel old), when it was a shiny new series, I watched Princess Principal like a dozen times in the span of a year.

Steampunk spy thriller. Hearty recommend. Follows Team White Pigeon, an espionage team for the Albion Commonwealth based out of a prestigious school for aristocrats in the Kingdom of Albion in the midst of a British cold war. Good blending of character drama and spy intrigue.

Been watching anime since the 80's, my faves being Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, and Perfect Blue. Right now I'm digging Dorohedoro and Dandadan, as well as the anime based on Cyberpunk 2077 (Edgerunners).
