My favorite modern one so far is Girls und Panzer (pictured), it's about young girls who drive around in WWII era tanks and shoot at each other for sport. Another one that is good (my friend is really into it) is Uma Musume: pretty Derby, it's about young girl-horses who race, and the winner gets to perform a pop song. All of the girls are based on real life Japanese race horses, and they have even collaborated with the Kentucky Derby. Seriously, there is some crazy things going on with that show nowadays.
The classics are also great, Cowboy Bebop, Record of Lodoss War, Ghost in the Machine (prophetic). barefoot Gen was the first anime I had ever seen. It was survivors account of the Hiroshima bombing, and has one of the most brutal explosion scenes ever put to film.

Just putting my feelers out for fellow weebs!girlsundpanzer.jpg

I'm a fan (of some) but not a fanboy or weeb. Mostly "seinen" of varying types, typically drama, suspense or horror, but it depends, gamut runs from "Higurashi" to "SPY x FAMILY".

Here's what I have seen, sorted by my rating (though they set each season separate, so some seasons rank higher than others on some shows, but you can sort by name or something too):

Yeah I like anime a lot. I’ve been watching Gundam Seed, Inuyasha and Delicious in Dungeon lately.
Love the classics like Akira, Golgo 13, Ranma 1/2, Appleseed, Dominion, vampire hunter d and robotech.
I’ve been reading Dorohedoro, Vinland Saga and Gundam Thunderbolt as far as manga goes.

I've been watching anime about 5 or 6 years now.

Ranma 1/2 took FOREVER to watch, what with its 161 episodes. Oh, My Goddess; xxxHOLIC; The Old Man Reincarnated as a Villainess; Overlord; The Apothecary Diaries; The 8th Son, Are You Kidding Me?; Management of Novice Alchemist; Kuma, Kuma, Kuma Bear; I Shall Survive Using Potions; I Got a Cheat Ability in a Different World, and Became Extraordinary Even in the Real World.

I find giant robots on a planetary surface to be excusable (like the powered suits in Heinlein's Starship Troopers NOVEL.) However, giant robots in deep space are entirely pointless and stupid.

Early 2000s for me too: I haven’t watched anything newer than that. Still enjoy watching Sorcerer Hunters and Trigun, but my favorite is still Excel Saga.

Every month at work, when the new hires introduce themselves, at least one says “I’m into anime”. I suspect this doesn’t mean the same thing it did 20 years ago.

Honestly to me it's just another genre that ranges from utter tripe to genuine masterpieces.
This Movie and this anime, can stand up with dramas filmed with real human actors on the screen. In fact they're both just great movies in my opinion with very human stories and the second one is told in a way that would probably not work as well in live action.
On a side note.... This freakin story comes from an insane and amazing book and while the movie is actually good it's such a shell of what the book contained. It would have worked way better as anime or at least a western production inspired by anime (I don't have a strong opinion on the it's gotta be from Japan to be anime debate) .

I suppose I'd better add Speed Racer, then: we watched it every day after school back in the 70s.
Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets/G-Force as well. Then there were Golion/Voltron and the Shogun Warriors.
