Well, it is possible that a very freakishly high gust blew the ship off course. Those container ships have an incredible amount of windage, and once several degrees off course in a narrow channel, it's impossible to stop in time- as the wind is still pushing you into the bank, and your momentum can't be reversed for a mile. Your bow thrusters, stern thrusters and rudder are powerless against a powerful wind hitting the massive wall of containers from the side.
The secret is to anticipate such and keep the bow crabbing into the wind at the exact right degree.
There may be instances where such is nigh impossible.
