Anyone Smoked a "carburated" pipe?

This ad showed up in another thread, and I got to wondering...



Have any of you tried one of these? Does the "carburetor" actually do any good or was it just a sales gimmick like I suspect. Supposedly it helped eliminate moisture buildup in the bottom of the bowl. I gave it a think, and don't see how.

I've one. I think the carburetor allows more air into the chamber, thereby making the smoke hotter. There's a reason why they no longer make pipes with carburetors.

Most pipes are fuel injected now.

I have one unsmoked (?) on the rack, i think i got it for like 20 bucks on fleabay just because it was different, still haven't tried it lol. I don't know if i need a carb on a tobacco pipe.

Just a hole and as a bonus something else i dislike a stinger! it will never get smoked.

So, even without the stinger, thats 3 holes you have to clean out? No thanks. I can barely handle cleaning two...

I notice no one has said they like em yet. Looks to me like it would be easy to stop up the little hole in the bottom and make it into a good pipe.

Does that hole go all the way through to the bottom of the bowl? If so, I'm imagining a Dakota Fire Hole...little smoke and a boatload of heat.

No. It's aluminium and gets hot!

Yes. The aluminium part sticks out of the bottom of the chamber and is shaped like a mini volcano with a hole through it.

This is what I'm wondering. I've had hot tar leak out of a new crack in a stem onto my hand before...

The hole isn't flush with the bottom but exits above it, so it'd have to be really goopy!

I have a few, I don’t notice that they really smoke any different than anything else. But they do tend to smoke pretty dry. Never had any “goop” leak out of the carburetor, that’s why it’s proud of the bottom of the chamber. It was a gimmick, but not so much of one that it makes the pipes smoke bad or anything like that.

Same here. I have a pre-1938 one that smokes well, not hot at all. I'm also in the camp that likes the stingers in the older Kaywoodies (this one has the big ball version).

It’s far less air than you would think, the hole is somewhere around 1/64”
