I've gravitated to just bulk blends, and YOU DON'T NEED TO PUT THEM IN MASON JARS!

I've done very well with the 5 gallon buckets with the screw on lid attachment, very easy to access and seal well. I buy Mac Baren Vanilla Cream in the 1 lb plastic bags and store them in the bucket. I'm up to 8+ years aging on this blend and the moisture level is fine (I am in a damp climate, which probably helps).

When I open the bag I'll either reseal it and put it back in the tub, or jar it for readier access, depending on how quick I go through it.

Since I've bought alot more this year, I'm going to try storing it in a large plastic Coleman Cooler I have, which seems to seal tightly. I'll probably bag them in mylar also, which I've never tried. Maybe even look at some sort of humidifier using distilled water.

My current main bulk blends are: Mac Baren Vanilla Cream, Sutliff Match Ready Rubbed, Sutliff 507 Virginia Flake, and Mac Baren Mixture.

My secondary bulk blends (more seasonal or for a change) are: Stokkebye Proper English, Lane BS-005 (a great bulk English!), Mac Baren Pure Virginia, Mac Baren Plumcake, etc.

Just compute what that tinned blend costs per pound and compare it to a bulk.
Does Vanilla Cream age well? I am starting my cellar just bought 3lbs of father dempsey today and am looking for other blends to add. I like Vanilla Cream, but read somewhere the aromatic tobaccos can taste bad after time.

I wonder how many of you bulk buyers have costed out the difference between a bulk and a tin. You are talking about maybe .50 cents a bowl more for the best tobacco out there. Think about how many bowls a day you smoke and then figure out the fact that if you smoked nothing but tins, it would have no effect on the quality of your life.
My Capstan Blue Flake was like .86 per 3 gram bowl. I don't get the thinking that you are saving all kinds of money when you really aren't.
For 8oz Tins I might agree but smaller tins can easily cost 3x more than bulk tobacco.
(Sutliff Creme Brulee at $30/lb vs. Molto Dolce at $86/lb. Balkan Sobranie Match $31/lb vs. White Knight $111/lb.)

I'm 70/30 bulk, but that's counting 14oz. codger tubs as "tins"

I was late to the game on pipes and tobacco and not long after I started I would read all about the fear-mongering (?) over congress banning internet tobacco sales, etc. So I needed to make hay and calculated that bulk was going to fill my coffers at a greater rate than tins given my budget. I have no regrets and find that label making and filling jars is actually kind of enjoyable. Jars are heavy though, so it's not just about space. If I had unlimited funds, unlimited time, and the opportunity to do it all over again, I might just go with tins because who doesn't love a tin with great art, font, and descriptions?

When I place an order for Granger it’s usually for eight 12 ounce cans. If you want to call that bulk. It’s a small square package ? which is easy to cellar.

With Pegasus, I purchase the 16 ounce bags (bulk) and transfer them to large size, 64 ounce ball jars in which I’m able to fit a full pound.

These are the only two tobaccos that I obtain in quantity. I purchase everything else in sample sizes of 1 to 2 ounces or in small tins.

I just recently got a 1oz sample of Pegasus but have yet to try it. Seeing your post reminds me I still need to try Granger.

You may not like either one. Reminds me of the wisdom of changing your horse because the guy in front of you made a larger bet on another.

These are simply my favorites after my long journey.

But I will say that a new friend of mine, whom I recently discovered is also a pipe smoker, has especially warmed to smoking Granger. He says it’s tasty and very hard not to like even though not complex. — He’s a fan of African Queen and other aromatics and light Latakia blends. — if this helps. Lol I know it doesn’t. Tastes are subjective, but he’s smoked through the 2 ounces of each.

1 pound of Habana Daydream is 44.52, and this will fit into four half pint jars, which is 1/3 of a dozen, which is about $12 estimated, which means the four jars are $4.

44.52 + 4 = 48.52, and the jars are reusable.

8 2 oz tins of Habana daydream at 11.05 is $92.

Bulk is $48.52 a pound and you get to reuse the jars, and in tins is $92.
You are paying almost twice as much, plus you have to dispose of the tins.

That said, there are many things that I like to cellar in the tins as well, but I am aware that it is not cost effective.

I’m not sure you thought this through. Didn’t you used to be in business or something?
Cos, I did own 2 businesses beginning in 1990-2017. I am not sure how that has anything to to with the conversation we are having. Am I missing something?

The math. Clearly jars and bulk tobacco is still much cheaper than buying tins.
I get you now. My math works differently. If I save .50 a bowl 10 bowls a week that is a lousy 5 bucks. I don't know anyone whose life will change over 5 bucks. Hell even Capstan Blue flake only costs around .82 for a 3 gram bowl. Try buying a decent cigar for that price. Tins are cheap as dirt when compared to anything. Unless you are smoke 10-15 bowls a day, it shouldn't matter what a tin costs. I smoke 4-6 bowls a day and I still cannot believe how cheap pipe tobacco is. Yes I did almost all my cellaring in 2012 and 2013 but even when I bought tins of 2016 Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky (100 tins for 701) it is dirt cheap.

Yes, but that is just pipe tobacco to cigars. Your original post was that bulk cost more than tins. I smoke cigars too, apples and oranges. IMO.

But, you may have been thinking that jars cost a lot more than they do.

I never meant that bulks cost more than tins, just the opposite. My mistake if people thought that is what I meant. The point I was trying to make was that even the high price of tins over the price of bulks is not worth worrying about, that is all.

Yes, some aromatics can have the flavorings go off, even rancid. However, I've had good luck with the Mac Baren Vanilla Cream. I'm working on a pound bag made in August of 2013 and its great. I've been doing this for awhile. The vanilla does fade, is not as strong as the fresh, but still tastes fine, and the Virginias get smoother. I like the vanilla more in the background anyway, but if you don't then it might not work for you.

I've also got some aged tins, and the vanilla doesn't fade as quickly in those, probably because there is very little air in there. My prior post has more info on how I store it, etc:

I buy tins when it is the only format, or to try new things. I smoke bulks daily though, and that’s by design. Typically, I’ve been getting a lb of MacBaren old dark fired ready rubbed and C&D poplar camp once a month for daily smoking, and some random tins of interesting new things for weekends at home.

I try tins and bulk for new blends.

For my regular blends I some are available in bulk others are not - that's when it gets pricey. On the other hand I don't smoke that much maybe 1 or 2 bowls a day and even skip a day or two from time to time.
