Sutliff makes one called Balkan II in bulk. Good english blend, the orientals are very distinct and carry big flavor. Kramer’s has one called Father Dempsey that’s available in bulk. Another good english, kind of a mild version of Presby mixture. Sutliff does a Blue Note blend that I used to buy under Altadis. It’s great for an aromatic. I think it’s better than the Dan version, and the ribbon cut is easier to pack.

I have about 12 blends in jars. Everything but the Borkum Riffs were bought in bulk, usually 2 oz at a time in order togive it a fair test. if i find one i really like, I'll get a half pund next time. I need morew jars.

A fair bit of what I buy is bulk because many of the Sam Gawith, Gawith Hoggarth tobaccos are only sold that way. Full Virginia Plug and St James Plug are 2 that come to mind but there are plenty of others.

I buy bulks if they available only in bulk, obviously. If there is a choice, for C&D and Sutliff, I buy the bulk to save money. For Sam Gawith, I favor the tins because the distributor tends to sit on the inventory allowing the bulks, which are boxed in non-airtight containers, to dry out and the toppings to dissipate. The same used to be true for Gawith Hoggarth until Laudisi took over and, for now, distributes them upon receipt.

When I first got into pipe smoking I was trying to sample every tin under the sun but realized that this was an unsatisfyingly expensive endeavor as my palette is actually quite narrow. I realized I’d rather find a few good blends and spend/save that money for buying a pipe. I also realized that I’m just really cheap.

Since then I’ve mainly looked for tobaccos in bulk because I still want to try things here and there but only have to commit to an ounce. This allows me to try a bunch without breaking that bank. And if I do find something that I want to have in the cellar, I can buy a bunch of it for a good price.

Is there anyone else out there who’s mainly a bulk buyer?
I came to a very similar conclusion myself... but my palate isn't narrow, I actually love lots of different types of blends. However, I AM sick of spending so much on tobacco every 2-3 months. I haven't yet tried Sutliff's Match Sunrise, which is their Early Morning Pipe match blend, but I have tried their Match Balkan Sobranie, and I love it, it's a major part of my rotation. I also have a lot of Sutliff's Virginia Slices, their Stoved Virginia, English Oriental, and their Medium English. Sutliff is fantastic for quality, inexpnsive bulk blends. Also, I'm not a big aromatic smoker, but Sutliff has a ton of great aro blends too.

I also have a lot of various Wilke tobaccos. They're great too, but honestly, not really that much of a discount compared to tins.
I am on the same general mission though, trying to find bulk blends that fit my tastes... unfortunately, I've yet to find one that matches my favorite blend, Presbyterian.

One more thing, AroEnglish...
I buy mostly bulk because I gravitate toward the Match blends. I enjoy trying some of the newer tin tobaccos, but I still come back to the "Codger" blends and the Match blends.
Hey WVOldFart... have you tried Sutliff's Match Sunrise (their Early Morning Pipe match)? I'm a huge fan of Sutliff's blends, and I love EMP, but I don't know how close it is to the original.

I have not tried it yet. There are several I haven't tried. My favorites are Match Field and Stream, Hines Mixture,Holiday Match and Walnut match. I smoke several others, such as Rum and Maple Match and Flying Dutchman but not as often. I, like you, am a fan of Sutliff's blends and feel me owe them a load of gratitude for continuing these wonderful old blends.

Yeah when I think of bulk I usually mean ~$3/oz. I’ve been wanting to try some WIlke blends and love Boswell Northwoods but they’re priced more like tins so I haven't bought any. I would've be glad to spend the $5/oz on Northwoods but it doesn't cellar well as it loses its signature taste the longer it sits.

I wonder how many of you bulk buyers have costed out the difference between a bulk and a tin. You are talking about maybe .50 cents a bowl more for the best tobacco out there. Think about how many bowls a day you smoke and then figure out the fact that if you smoked nothing but tins, it would have no effect on the quality of your life.
My Capstan Blue Flake was like .86 per 3 gram bowl. I don't get the thinking that you are saving all kinds of money when you really aren't.

1 pound of Habana Daydream is 44.52, and this will fit into four half pint jars, which is 1/3 of a dozen, which is about $12 estimated, which means the four jars are $4.

44.52 + 4 = 48.52, and the jars are reusable.

8 2 oz tins of Habana daydream at 11.05 is $92.

Bulk is $48.52 a pound and you get to reuse the jars, and in tins is $92.
You are paying almost twice as much, plus you have to dispose of the tins.

That said, there are many things that I like to cellar in the tins as well, but I am aware that it is not cost effective.

I’m not sure you thought this through. Didn’t you used to be in business or something?

I cost things out, and it matters. It's just like a salesman I was talking to last week about ordering two pallets of silage wrap. We were haggling over the price when he said, we're only 20.00 apart on a 4300.00 order. I said yes it's just 20.00, but after you, I will call five other vendors today for other supplies, and if I save 20.00 each time that saves me 100.00, and it continues.
Simple economics.

But, $40 on an $88 order….
