I've just bought a ceramic pipe from muxiang and was wondering if there are any precautions I should take when smoking it, or if maybe my money would have been better spent on another ceramic pipe. I have several briar pipes, but have been looking for a pipe that doesn't ghost.
Thoughts?

That one looks good, I don't know that you should buy something different. And given enough time to build up some cake, which all pipes will do, they will all ghost to some degree or another. If you believe a ceramic pipe or meer won't ghost, smoke some tobacco with Lakeland essence in it and you'll quickly find out that's not true.

All blends will ghost to a certain extent. The stronger the blend, the more it will ghost. The way to prevent this is to dedicate pipes to a certain genre or a specific blend. Were I to smoke just one bowl of a VaPer, VaOr or English blend (especially) in my Altinok (which is dedicated to Sir John Flake Virginia), I would easily be able to detect the other blend the next time I smoke Sir John's in it. If you want to fully enjoy and appreciate a specific blend, dedicate a pipe to it for 25 or more bowls and see this for yourself.

Interesting, after reading your post, I Googled the meaning and came up with "a woody fragrance." Interesting.

I knew a guy from our pipe club that was a ceramic pipe enthusiast. he smoked them a lot. And, in a pipe club discussion we came to an agreement that ceramic pipes and clay pipe were good to help teach new pipe smokers to slow down and smoke very cool. Because once you get that down with a glazed ceramic pipe, you can smoke any pipe cool.

I appreciate the info and pointers! I only smoke a few blends of tabacco, mainly captain black cherry and sutliff chocolate mousse; guess my first mistake was not dedicating pipes to a specific flavor; a mistake that I will be adressing directly.

Very interesting; I have tended to smoke pretty hot on my briars. Know any tips on smoking colder? I suppose I could look into youtube about it, but I don't know any good pipe-tubers.

Those 2 blends would likely leave a significant ghost from the flavoring. Try dedicating one of those blends to the same pipe for 20 bowls or so. I bet you see a significant difference.

It really did; I noticed a difference immediately. Three bowls with a smaller ember and a slower cadence made it so that I actually tasted the tabacco :0 and no more nasty smell from the top of my pipe. I used to get a nasty and very pungent aroma from the top of the pipe when I smoked. Thsnks for the thread, my guy!

I have a Royal Copenhagen double-walled porcelain pipe.

I doesn’t ghost.
And you can get it back to bare walls with one or two damp paper kitchen towels after each smoke.

Sponsor The Danish Pipe Shop has a few listed in their estate pipes section

Personally I wouldn't smoke from any pipe made from Muxiang, Joyoldelf, or Scotte, their materials seem rather dubious and you never know what you're going to get. Some will say to avoid all Chinese pipes, but that's not a fair blanket statement since there's some great Chinese artisans and even a few legit pipe factories. I don't know much about porcelain pipes but I know that Zenith is the most well known producer, they're Dutch and the pipes are often in a Delftware style

I'd like to take this opportunity to show you that you cannot put all Chinese pipes in the same boat, and to certainly not avoid a pipe because of its Chinese origin. I know nothing of this particular pipe maker, only that he goes (went?) by the name "Cai Dou" and is of Chinese make. It might just be one of the most beautiful, flawless peices of briar that I have ever seen, and the craftsmanship of this pipe are second to none. It's a sort of bent-pot/Eskimo shape, and undeniably stunning. Found this as an estate for $220 and it had been smoked maybe once. 533C63FA-6DFD-47D3-9474-48D1AF37B50D.jpeg

The only place I have seen Muxiang is on ebay and they were briars. Problem is you dont get the pipe in the photo, at least that is what I assume given that they have listed 10 avaliable.

Wow that's stunning piece. Really what it is is one should avoid Chinese pipes from Amazon. My aunt got me a Scotte from Amazon for Christmas and it smells like chemicals and I can't event tell what wood it is, so I never smoked it. Also got me a pouch of Captain Black. I just wrote a nice thank you text and thankfully she never asked about it, I did appreciate the thought

Yes I've seen the Amazon pipes from China and I would definately stay clear of them as well, personally.
