Just curious- anyone do this? I have, with mixed results. I have put Lat forward blends in my pipe first (half bowl), then topped it off with VA's. I think last time I used Capstan Blue. Interesting. Starts off all mild and sweet, but you taste the Lat, even though its not burning yet. Then around mid-point it changes over.

Maybe this is sacrilege- I don't know, but it opens up a whole new experience. To me anyways....

Anyone else do this? Any great combos? Seems like the possibilities are endless for a custom-made leisurely smoke. Can't decide on which blend for a walk around the block?-- Have both!!

Layering sounds interesting, if I could get the flavors to unfold in a sequence. I tend to just mix the

tobaccos, and with that, I've had some success.

mrjerke- I thought it may be a sin. But mixing together different tobacs is not? I don't want to get pummeled off the forum, just curious. For me Two tobacs LAYERED is a more interesting smoke than mixing two tobacs TOGETHER.

I tried it, I KNOW I didn't invent it, but it is an interesting experience...........

There was a video a while back of a lad taking cob MacArthur and loading it with three or four different tobaccos. It's a neat idea but I'd rather just have a bowl of this and a second bowl of that then try them all at once. I have simple tastes. Lol

Yes. It's called the tobacco parfait. And some consider it a sin.
It's considered a sin, because as pipe smokers, we can't take much more complexity. With all the different types of tobacco blends available, where do you start to find your perfect smoke? Then aging tobacco was introduced as a factor. Next the idea of pipe material be it wood, cob, meer, and how it imparts its taste on the experience. We finally get to a point of saturation of outside influences.
So, along comes this random guy and asks "What if we took the existing tobacco offerings out there....and layered them in the bowl while packing?" "and we then smok......*BANG!!*
That man was shot dead, and his body fed to feral hogs.
It is a sin, and there will be no further discussion on it thank you very much. ;-)

Only because I had a scant amount of tobacco as a starving college student, an old tiny amount of Granger and some PA I found in the back of a dresser and to be honest it sucked, wouldn't advocate it but to each his own!

I had a tin of Montford Point Marine by C&D once. Tried to smoke it straight, might as well have taken pure liquid nicotine and shot it intravenously into my veins. I'd gotten to the point where I was putting Carter Hall in the bottom half of the bowl and topping it with Montford Point Marine. By the time I got down to the Carter Hall it helped me to come down off the hellacious nicotine high. I've also layered a sweet vanilla or chocolate aromatic with a good stout English with pretty good results.

Wow - I didn't know I was such a sinner! I've been doing this since I started smoking. I usually like to put either Latakia or aros toward the bottom and took it off with burley, vas or something really mild. I've had some of my favorite smokes this way!

I've done it about 4 times and didn't care for the result. Not sure why, just didn't like the way the flavors came off. I like the way a bowl of the same tobacco changes over the course of the bowl, and when you layer, at least for me, I missed that aspect. So I'm sticking to the way of the righteous and not getting shot! ;)

I have wondered about using a tobacco that tends to get too strong towards the bottom of the bowl on the top, with a mild tobacco on the bottom to see if the stronger tobacco would lend some of its flavor to the more mild tobacco. But I have not moved beyond thinking about it.

Well, if it's a sin, I guess I ought to try it. I think two or three distinct tobaccos might work. Maybe a bottom

layer of Virginia, a middle of burley, and a top layer of Cavendish might do it. I suspect they'll mix as much

as fire in sequence, but I'll try anything (this tame) once.

Why does the scene from Shrek where Donkey states everyone loves parfait keep playing in my mind? Thanks mrjerke!

with escudo, i sometimes put a pinch of carter hall or emp on top...works sort of like kindling.
that's about as wild as i get anymore...after several descents into hell, i have learned I am a much better consumer of tobacco than I am a blender of tobacco.

Despite the above, I am always mixing and matching my tobaccos!

Interesting discussion. I was thinking about that for some time but never tried it so far. I smoke only non- aromatics and like latakia based mixtures and VAs. But the thing is, that towards the third 1/3 of the bowl the latakia aroma seems to fade out while Virginias keep their taste. I was thinking that I could for instance but a Virginia first and put a English on top to enhance the experience. What do you think?
