My first bowl of the day (everyday) is always a favorite parfait of mine. And by the way, if you look at back issues of the old Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris or read recent issues of the NASPC Pipe Collector, you will note that layering different blends in one's pipes is a common practice by many.
I take Murray's era Royal Yacht and load the first 3rd of the bowl with it. I then top it off with 2/3rds Five Brothers. The Five Brothers is a Burley that offers a lot of strength and readily absorbs the flavors of tobacco it is mixed with without adding its own flavor. I love the mysterious casing of the Royal Yacht, and as I smoke I get the strength of the Five Brothers and the flavor of the Royal Yacht. My palate tingles with pleasure with each sinful puff.

I've only done it with Autumn Evening on top and Nightcap on bottom and it was good. I liked it a bit more than just blending the two. It is definitely a more distinct transition between the two.

I have never "layerd" my tobacco, however I do have a blend of my own consisting of tobaccos I have sampled that didn't really zing, I combine them all in a jar I keep in my shop and this is my work blend, occasionally I get another sample that gets added to the blend.
The way I see it is if a tobacco company can employ blenders to produce a mix then I can mix my own with whatever, I always have plenty on hand to fill my cob and enjoy a smoke as I work, and always a new experience, and as for the sample that didn't live up to expectation, it still served its purpose.
Some may call me a heathen for this practice, but I think there are a few out there that have done the same.

I think people expect the layers to "fire" in sequence, and that doesn't always happen. After maybe one transition, I think it burns like a mix/blend anyway.

I tried it once and it wasn't a great experience.. it was like a ghosting nightmare, I prefer mixing different blends well before packing them.. this gives a waaaay better experience
