Any seasoned morel mushroom hunters on the forum. It seems like a good fit for a pipe smoker. Walking in the woods puffing a pipe with your wife, kids and the dog while enjoying the beauty of God's country. Only did it a few times when i was younger and it was really a buddy and myself drinking beers in the woods. So i would appreciate any pointers to help improve the chances of success.

I did shrooms years ago as a kid, but I don't think those are the same shrooms.

Yes we do it here.. often in my wife’s grandma’s timber.
pointer: look in heavily wooded areas near creeks or low valleys. Look on hillsides.. they often grow near dead stumps and under mayflowers or jack-in-the-pulpits. Use a walking stick to move leaves and brush. It helps to get to a low area (the creek or valley) and look up the side of the hill so you can see underneath the brush and mayflower leaves. Put the picked morels in an onion sack or other open netted sack so the spores drop out as you hunt.

If there were any wildfires near your area last year, start there first.

Morels are a rare find in our area. A buddy finds them in the burn areas. Matse takis, Black Trumpets and bolites. My favs are the Golden Chantrelles. I mostly find them around Thanksgiving time. So they end up inside the turkey-in the stuffing. I will only smoke a pipe - in the woods- during the rainy season.

We went out sunday to look because it was so nice out. Didnt find any mushrooms but my boy found a nice flashlight someone lost. Think its still a little early here in Michigan but it got everone in a better mood just being in the woods instead of the house. Thanks for the tips ill take any ideas you guys can offer.

I’m too scared to do it. Eat the wrong one and you might wake up running backwards naked through the forest with blood all over your face. Or die like that dipshit from “Into the Wild.” I’ll stick to wild blueberries and fiddlehead ferns.

Other than that the only foraging I do is with my .300 Win Mag.

I’m with you. You screw up once and you’re toast. Or at least that’s what “the old people” used to say when I was a kid. Mushrooms were everywhere when the summer rains came. We used to pick them or just play with them and the old people would yell at us saying they were poisonous. I don’t know. I don’t really like mushrooms enough to mess with them.

You speak the truth right here. I know them as eierschwammerl, and they are incredible. They don't grow around where I live, but they are little pieces of heaven in scrambled eggs or in a nice sauce.

In our area the poisonous ones look really obvious. Death Caps:Amanita_phalloides(mgw-22).jpg The ones that I like are distinctive looking. here's not too much dangerous mystery to it. Black Trumpets are safe and yummy.Black-Trumpet.jpg

There are no poisonous mushrooms that look like a morel. If you are mistaking a smooth looking or other colored mushroom for a morel you’re blind.

A morel looks like a troll’s stinger fruiting from the dirt. ?

right very distinctive looking. THINK MOST PEOPLE WOULD BE ABLE TO SPOT THE DIFFERENCES. I know what they look like I just haven't been able to find them. we'll go out and try it again this weekend.
